When a famous comic playwright like Neil Simon writes a movie called THE SLUGGER'S WIFE, one might suspect that he's jealously thinking about that other famous, although not so comic, playwright, Arthur Miller, whose wife, Marilyn Monroe, had previously been a real slugger's wife. Is this a thinly veiled rehash of the story of Jolitin' Joe and Marilyn Monroe? Absolutely. A slugger, Darryl Palmer (Michael O'Keefe), falls for a singer, Debby (Rebecca DeMornay), but every time he tries to get a date with her he fails, and each failure is mimicked by his performance on the baseball field. But when they finally do come together, his average goes up and they get married. But she's bored and frustrated staying at home and hanging around with ballplayers; she wants to continue her own career. So, in spite of a surfeit of athletic sex peppered with Neil Simon's jokes about pitching and catching and hitting a home run, they break up. She sings, he slumps. The Yankee Clipper and the Blonde Bombshell never got back together, but that's American life, in which, as Scott Fitzgerald said, There are no second acts. In this romantic urban drama, a diminishing bottom line leads to upheaval at Seattle`s K-Sof radio station, which for years has catered to an upscale classical-music audience. But in recent years patronage and listenership have fallen considerably, and the station decides to switch from classical music to hip-hop. Night maintenance man Oliver Jackson (Walter Powell) is a fervent devotee of hip-hop and strongly supports the shift, but his live-in girlfriend, Rea Williams (Rhonda Rene), has a different opinion. She is the leader of the Sistas of Justice, which opposes rap music and is organizing a boycott of the station. As the couple becomes polarized on opposite sides of this battle, Oliver is increasingly attracted to Janice Green (Tiffany Haddish), the beautiful morning host of newly rechristened K-Hip. Meanwhile, Oliver`s predicament is mirrored in program director Bob Johnson`s (Rico E. Anderson) growing affections for Joy Campbell (Cat Hurston), a music connoisseur who detests rap but has a soft spot for Bob. In a heated battle between love and music, which will win out?

Roland Joffe's unflinching drama recounts the true story of New York Times journalist Sidney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) and Cambodian journalist and translator Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), who found themselves trapped in the nightmare of the Khmer Rouge revolution in Cambodia. While stationed in Phnom Penh in the early 1970s, Schanberg and Pran become close friends and confidants, negotiating and writing many groundbreaking stories. When the ruling Lon Nol government is overthrown by the Khmer Rouge, the country is turned upside down--killing is common in the streets, and children become gun-toting informants. Despite their exhaustive efforts to free Pran, they have no choice but to leave him behind. Pran is forced to endure excruciating agony at the Pol Pot death camps, where any shred of individuality or dissent is beaten out of the prisoners. After years of brutal torture, Pran manages to escape and begins a long odyssey to Thailand and the border refugee camps. As Pran struggles to stay alive, Schanberg endures life in New York wracked with guilt over the loss of his good friend, desperately attempting to locate him. This haunting drama is epic in its portrayal of a war-torn country devastated by mass genocide. Images of both great horror and beauty resonate with awesome power and honesty. Iranian director Dariush Mehrjui offers a touching tale of love and life in this absorbing drama. Hamid is an intellectual who is struggling with the concept of love. He can neither write about it, nor convince his divorce-hungry wife to love him.
