Richard Gere is Julian Kay, a slick emotionally and spiritually deprived L.A. hustler in AMERICAN GIGOLO. The critically acclaimed director Jean Becker (THE CHILDREN OF THE MARSHLAND) and the son of filmmaker Jacques Becker, remakes Sacha Guitry`s film, LA POISON, about marital bliss turned sour. Jojo (Jacques Villeret) is a sweet, simple man who only wants to tend his goats and make cheese on his farm, which he calls Paradise. But it isn`t easy when his wife Lulu (Josiane Balasko), an ogre-like, mean-spirited wench won`t stop harassing him. One day while watching television, Jojo sees a famous defense lawyer, Maurice Jacquard (Andri Dussolier) exalting his latest acquittal. Inspired, Jojo goes to see the lawyer and tells him that he`s killed his wife, hoping to discover what kind of mitigating circumstances would lead to a pardon if he really did kill her. What follows is a madcap trial where all the colorful townspeople of Jojo`s provincial French village follow him to the city to stand up for him in a contemporary take on the fairy-tale THE TOWN MOUSE AND THE CITY MOUSE.This film was screened as part of the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2001 festival organized by The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.

Clint Eastwood's HONKYTONK MAN is certainly one of the actor-director's gentler works. The low-key period film takes place during the depression, with Eastwood starring as Red Stovall, a struggling country singer on the verge of his big break. Red's been invited to audition for the Grand Ole Opry, but as the film opens, he's a long way from success. He shows up at his sister's Oklahoma home drunk, in a stolen car, and suffering from tuberculosis. His sister ends up sending her son, Whit (Kyle Eastwood), along with Red to Nashville to make sure he gets to his audition in one piece. The interaction between Red and his 14-year-old nephew is the focus of the film. Eastwood again plays a rather unreliable type. Red is a bit of a scoundrel, and he and Whit get into quite a bit of trouble on their way to Tennessee, as Red's health deteriorates. At one point, they pick up a teenage prostitute (Alexa Kenin) who begs them to take her along to Nashville so she can pursue a singing career. Former college professor William Conroy (Rob Lowe) is a convict serving time for vehicular manslaughter.
