This controversial British television series features Christopher Eccleston (28 DAYS LATER) as Steve Sharp, a man who believes he is the son of God. The ambitions announced in the title THE LOSS OF SEXUAL INNOCENCE are realized in the concept of the film itself--the tale of a modern man intercut with scenes of Adam and Eve's fall. Writer-director Mike Figgis charts episodes in the sexual life of Nic (played as an adult by Julian Sands), a filmmaker who seems a lot like Figgis himself. (Nic, like Figgis, is raised in Africa and lives in England as a teenager.) As these episodes build to form a psychological portrait of Nic, Figgis flashes to a naked Adam being born from the center of a lake, then to the birth of Eve, their discoveries of the world, Eve's encounter with the serpent, and their expulsion from the garden. The modern story and the biblical one are not necessarily parallel, but their grim conclusions are inextricably linked in a universal cycle of sin and retribution. The film is almost wordless, relying instead on striking imagery and beautiful 16mm handheld camerawork. Director John G. Avildsen`s SAVE THE TIGER is a complex character study of businessman Harry Stoner (Jack Lemmon), the CEO of a once-successful clothing company in 1970s Los Angeles. He and his business partner, Phil Greene (the great Jack Gilford), have seen better days--their company is failing, and on the eve of an important fashion show, they must make a decision about its future. Harry believes that the only way out of their financial crisis is arson and must face the possibility of that immoral decision while trying to convince Phil that it`s truly the only way out. A sleazy wheeler and dealer, Harry`s not above such things as pimping for his important clients, cheating on his taxes, and running his business by the seat of his pants. But above all, Harry`s suffering from a midlife crisis and pining for the bygone days of his childhood, when--he believes--things were simpler and more clear-cut. Now residing in the lap of luxury, he struggles to maintain his lifestyle without losing his sense of self. As he wanders the city of Los Angeles in a daze, he meets a young hitchhiking hippie (Laurie Heineman) whom he spends the night with, but even this doesn`t seem to recapture his youth. Struggling with his personal demons and the future of his business, Harry has to make a final, moral decision that will determine the way he spends the rest of his days. This intimate commentary on the evils of materialism features an Oscar-winning performance from Lemmon that is subtly and deeply moving.

This fish-out-of-water film was the beginning of a long association between Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood, who stars as the eponymous deputy sheriff from Arizona. The cowboy-cop is sent to New York City to extradite escaped murderer James Ringerman (Don Stroud), only to be told by police lieutenant McElroy (Lee J. Cobb) that the killer is recovering from an acid trip at Bellevue Hospital and can be released only with his doctors' approval. After some low-key flirtation with probation officer Julie Roth (Susan Clark), Coogan decides to take the bull by the horns and tricks Ringerman's Bellevue attendants into releasing him. However, on the way to the airport, the Arizona-bound cop is waylaid by Ringerman's amusingly wacked-out girlfriend, Linny (Tisha Sterling), and beaten senseless by a goon, allowing his prisoner to escape. Later, while in Julie's apartment, he surreptitiously extracts Linny's file to get her address and tracks her to an Electric Circus-like club whose habitues he regards with utter disdain, and he persuades the ditsy woman to take him back to her apartment. An amusing action film, COOGAN'S BLUFF makes much of the irony of the laconic Old West, with Eastwood being equally put off by both the bureaucratically hamstrung cops and the acid-fueled hippies.
