Four friends get in over their heads when they try to make a bigtime heist. They pull off the job, stealing a small, but priceless sculpture. Immediately, the sculpture is missing and the novice group of thieves find themselves burdened with a debt to a crime lord that they cannot pay. Their desperate attempt to save at least some of their lives is to have each member of the crew take out a $1 million life insurance policy. After the successful independent features about Chinese-American life DIM SUM and EAT A BOWL OF TEA, director Wayne Wang took on the daunting task of adapting Amy Tan's sprawling, multigenerational best-seller THE JOY LUCK CLUB. After her mother's death, June (Ming-Na Wen) is asked to take her place in a mahjong club. The three other members, like her mother, were all born in China before the 1949 revolution. When June learns that she has two half sisters in China, she plans a trip to meet them. With this catalyst, the women begin to tell stories, not just about but their own mothers and their lives in China, but also about their often strained relationships with their Americanized daughters. The flashbacks to China are dramatic, and the stories are heartbreaking. As the film progresses, June learns about a culture that's supposedly her own but that she can touch only through the commonality of the mother-daughter bond. It is this nexus that makes the movie work. There are multiple points of view, but they are always connected by the universal desire for one generation of women to pass on their hopes for a better life to their daughters. Running the Empire Grill while attempting to deal with myriad life crises proves to be a tough job for Miles Roby (Ed Harris) in EMPIRE FALLS. Miles picked up the managerial reigns some 20 years ago, but has subsequently struggled to maintain the business. To compound his worries, Miles has to put up with the constantly erratic behavior of his father, Max (Paul Newman), and the attentions of the hardheaded owner of the Empire Grill, Francine Whiting (Joanne Woodward). To make matters worse, Miles`s wife Janine (Helen Hunt) leaves him, but despite all these problems, Miles can`t tear himself away from this sleepy part of Maine and start a new life. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Richard Russo, this is a faithful adaptation that creates an unwavering portrait of small-town American life.
