Having directed an acclaimed segment of the short-story omnibus BOYS LIFE 4 (O BEAUTIFUL), writer-director Alan Brown makes his feature-length debut with a character-driven exploration of marriage and fidelity, BOOK OF LOVE. David (Simon Baker) and Elaine (Frances O'Connor) are a happily married couple whose relationship has nonetheless become a bit sedate. With Elaine unready to have kids, the couple strike up a friendship with 15-year-old Chet (Gregory Smith, EVERWOOD), a motherless youth who works part-time at the local ice cream shop. But Chet's presence at the dinner table and on family vacations soon sparks sexual attraction with Elaine, prompting an uneasy romantic triangle that challenges the couple's relationship. Bryce Dallas Howard (THE VILLAGE) turns in a supporting performance as one of David's students, who harbors a crush on her teacher and offers yet another source of tension in the marriage.

A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film romances, it becomes clear from their first meeting that the director, Martin Ritt, is more interested in his carefully observed setting, and in the comic flirtations between Murphy and Emma flirtations, than in making a conventional picture. In fact, some of the film's strongest comic scenes occur when the locals show off their color, including a hilarious sequence during a bingo game that showcases the amazing support cast. Controversial rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE, a bracing drama directed by the increasingly audacious Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man who is desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend, Future (Mekhi Phifer), is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money.
