Nicholas Cage's directorial debut SONNY is the story of a young man (James Franco) who returns to the life he left behind in New Orleans after a brief stint in the Army. That life, provided by his mother Jewel (Brenda Blethyn), is one of small-time prostitution: mom is a madam, and Sonny has been in the brothel all his life. His brief excursion into the broader world makes Sonny want a different life, but he finds that his old habits--as well as the pull of young call girl Carol (Mena Suvari), and the bond with his mother's companion Henry (Harry Dean Stanton)--make leaving nearly impossible.For his first shot at directing, Cage chose a particularly gritty, knotted story in SONNY. Barry Markowitz's rich cinematography is nearly tactile, and Cage makes the interesting choice of having the colorful (in more ways than one) city of New Orleans mostly push through the edges of the movie, which is primarily shot in close-up. A Latina teenager comes of age in the often violent and emotionally abusive surroundings of the inner city in Los Angles. Leaving the unbearable struggle of living in El Salvador, Alicia heads for Los Angeles with her little brother in tow to live with her drug abusive aunt in the ghetto. She finds a job in an illegal sweatshop and loses the job when immigrant authorities raid the spot. When she returns home to her aunt without money, she is beaten. When her visible scars are noticed by welfare representatives at her school, she is placed in a foster home and separated from her brother. Lesser known than films by Scorsese and Coppola, John Huston's masterly FATCITY is a classic story of the American underdog, and deserves its place inthe canon of great 1970s films. Adapted from a Leonard Gardner novel, thissorely overlooked work brilliantly and unflinchingly portrays the lives of agroup of born losers.Set in California, the story revolves around the lives of poor fighters. Stacy Keach is Tully, a down-on-his-luck alcoholic boxer living in a flophouse and earning money as a field worker while trying for a comeback. Jeff Bridges is Ernie, his 18-year-old protege who is setting himself up for the same hard-luck life. Tully tries to pass his wisdom on to Ernie, attempting to give the kid the chances that he missed. Meanwhile, Tully also becomes involved with Oma (Susan Tyrell), a raging alcoholic who does nothing but drag him further down. This film initially presents itself asa Horatio Alger-like comeback or underdog story, but is actually a bleak, incisive character study.
