Cathryn (Susannah York) has secluded herself in a remote country home where she hopes to finish writing a children's book. It is in this country house that Cathryn will begin to feel a shift in her life. Reality begins to break down for her as the men in her life become more oppressive. A psychotic break finds Cathryn attempting to kill all these men, although some may already be dead.This early work from Robert Altman (wrongfully neglected for many years) could be seen as a film typical of its time as it shares a nonlinear kinship with similar disturbing works such as PERSONA, REPULSION, and DON'T LOOK NOW. However, the film is also a masterpiece of atmosphere, conveyed primarily through the score from John Williams and Stomu Yamashta and Vilmos Zsigmond's striking photography. YOUNG ADAM is David McKenzie's adaptation of Scottish Beat writer Alexander Trocchi's cult novel, a romantic murder mystery set on a barge in the canals of Scotland. Lovely photography by Giles Nuttgens, complemented by a lonely score by David Byrne, provides a picturesque backdrop for what is otherwise a seedy story of morality gone far astray and hopelessness taking hold of everyday life, with sex as the only outlet. Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton both lend excellent performances to the film, acting out a strained relationship of carnal misgiving that is their mutual respite.Working on a barge that travels to ports between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Joe (McGregor) is a randy ol' chap. He befriends Les (Peter Mullen) as they labor hard days shoveling coal and pass their evenings over pints and darts in the local pubs. But Joe is simply positioning himself to seduce Les' wife, Ella (Swinton), who he easily and frequently beds. A steamy affair with a heavy dose of on-screen coitus eventually leads to trouble for all three. Former DJ and Academy Award nominated director (for his short film HOLIDAY ROMANCE) Alexander Jovy examines the English club scene in the mystery SORTED. Carl (Matthew Rhys) is a naive country attorney who heads to London after his brother Justin dies in a suspicious drowning. He encounters the social circles that his brother was part of, and discovers a world of drugs, hedonism, wild parties, and throbbing dance music. This world--and Justin's ex-girlfriend Sunny (Sienna Guillory)--proves seductive to Carl, and he gets enveloped in it as Justin did, which may lead him down the same path of danger that proved deadly for his brother. Sheriff Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey) is a legend in the Texas border town of Frontera, the archetypical hero who supposedly saved the town from corruption. The discovery of a 40-year-old murder, however, threatens to tarnish Deeds's reputation and upset a fragile community riven between whites, Latinos, and blacks.
