Director James Ivory's HEAT AND DUST tells two parallel stories set in India, one in the present and the other in the days of British rule. In 1920s India, a young English bride, Olivia (Greta Scacchi), finds herself in a passionate, forbidden affair with the local Nawab (Shashi Kapoor). In the second story, Olivia's great niece, Anne (Julie Christie), travels to India and there learns of her great aunt's affair with the Nawab, her subsequent pregnancy, and her exile from the British community. Anne's life begins to roughly imitate that of Olivia's when she has an affair with a local Indian administrator (Zakir Hussain) and also becomes pregnant. Merchant Ivory screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala based the film's screenplay on her own acclaimed novel of the same name. Jhabvala was raised in England but after meeting her husband, an Indian architect, moved to India, where she lived for 24 years. Her screenplays AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A PRINCESS, HULLABALOO OVER GEORGIE AND BONNIE'S PICTURES, and HEAT AND DUST reflect her own experiences as a British citizen living in a foreign land. Director Kristian Levring, in this Dogme 95-inspired, 1920s period melodrama, provides a chilling look at the power of greed and sex. Seeking to make a quick fortune and to carry on an unconventional relationship, Sarah Morris (Janet McTeer, who cowrote the script) and her younger lover Hamish (J.J. Field) travel to the jungle to survey land for an English trading company. Instead of an exotic hideaway, the pair discovers a remote camp where the residents, after decades in the jungle, have become preoccupied with seizing control of the company fortune. Shrewish Mrs. Jones (Brenda Fricker) maintains tight control--doting on her sycophant nephew Norton (Philip Jackson), and constantly belittling the others, including her socially stunted son William (Tony Maudsley). Sarah and Hamish quickly find themselves in a Joseph Conrad-esque hell, and when Hamish falls ill and the company's money runs out, Sarah finds herself faced with a life-altering moral decision.Using minimal lighting, spare sets and costume design, and slow pacing, director Levring creates a claustrophobic atmosphere appropriate to the descent into madness and desperation faced by the characters. Superbly acted by the entire cast, Olympia Dukakis stands out as Erina, who, having grown up with the boorish William, has accepted her unrequited love for him and has settled for acting as his occasional sexual servant. This sequel to Chinatown opens in the postwar boom of 1948 as developers rapaciously exploit the natural resources of Southern California.
