I Capture the Castle (DVD) I Capture the Castle (DVD) » I Capture the Castle (DVD)

British period piece romance film fans should rejoice over I CAPTURE THE CASTLE, a film that earns its emotional payoffs, and manages to avoid the many clever and cloying traps that befall many of its brethren. Based on the novel by Dodie Smith, the tale surrounds an artistic family living in 1930s England in a rundown castle, waiting for their high-strung father to finish his next novel. Narrated by the 17-year-old daughter, Cassandra Mortmain (Romola Garai) who lives in the shadow of her older sister Rose (Rose Byrne), the film sweeps the viewer along on a believable mood of wistful longing, especially when two handsome brothers (Henry Thomas and Marc Blucas) come to visit the manor next door. Romance is in the air, but everyone soon finds themselves hopelessly ensnared in triangles of affection, and for all its victim's sweetness and good intentions, love is determined to run its own, contrary course. Thanks to an intelligent but not overly dry script there are plenty of rich characterization and dialogue to go around; and the cast is excellent, with Garai--beautiful and quietly brilliant in her first major role--a standout. Dario Marianelli's score achieves moments of genuine greatness and adds immeasurably to the film's emotional impact. Anyone looking for that rare romantic film that has both heart and brains, realism and magic, humor and tragedy, all in the least treacly, most refreshing senses of the words, this is the CASTLE to keep.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenPan& ScanAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAudio Commentary - 1. Borstal Boy (DVD) Borstal Boy (DVD) » Borstal Boy (DVD)

Peter Sheridan, the acclaimed Irish theater director and brother of film director Jim Sheridan (MY LEFT FOOT) makes his feature directorial debut with an adaptation of playwright, novelist, and political rogue Brendan Behan's autobiographical tale. In 1939, sixteen-year-old IRA recruit Behan (Shawn Hatosy), hides TNT in his trousers and boards a ferry for England, eager to further the Irish Republic's cause. Nabbed immediately by police, the underage Behan evades the hangman's noose, and is sentenced to four years at an English borstal, or reform school, run by the paternal Governor Joyce (Michael York). The cocky idealist, now living with the enemy--troubled boys that Brendan finds remarkably similar to himself--quickly begins planning his escape. To his dismay, Brendan becomes the object of handsome thief Charlie Millwall's (Danny Dyer) wistful homosexual affections. The young Irishman fights against association with a poofter, but in spite of himself, grows closer to Charlie. Meanwhile, Brendan begins a tenuous relationship with Joyce's daughter, Elizabeth (Eva Birthistle), a literate and upper crust painter. Hatosy and Dyer deliver nuanced performances that enhance Sheridan's loving homage to a literary legend's youthful exploration of sexuality and creativity.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAudio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene Selection

Desire Under the Elms (DVD) Desire Under the Elms (DVD) » Desire Under the Elms (DVD)

Delbert Mann's moody adaptation of the Eugene O'Neill tragedy DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS stars Sophia Loren in her American film debut. Ephraim Cabot (Burl Ives), the larger-than-life patriarch of a New England farm in 1840, has had three sons, now grown, by two different wives, both dead. He's bought out the shares in the farm of two of his sons, but a third, Eben (Anthony Perkins), stays on, believing he has a right to the land, which his mother had previously owned. The old man decides he wants another son, and makes a deal with Anna (Loren), a 20-year-old woman, to marry him in exchange for the deed to the land in his will. But perhaps inevitably, Loren finds herself attracted to young Eben, and when she becomes pregnant, Ephraim has had nothing to do with it. After the baby is born, the unwitting old farmer makes public his bargain with Anna; and as Eben, shocked and enraged, flees the farm, the young woman's response leads to tragedy for all. Perkins delivers a typically nuanced performance in this epic family saga that features a sweeping score by Elmer Bernstein and garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital Mono - English Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus
