In the midst of a heated battle during the American Civil War, three Union soldiers and three Confederate soldiers get separated from their units and wander alone through the wilderness until they meet by night on the banks of a creek. Unaware of their political differences, the six exhausted soldiers strike up a friendship, sharing food, conversation, and a common humanity as they huddle around the campfire. It isn't until the first light of morning that the soldiers see each other's uniforms and realize they are enemies, setting the stage for a violent confrontation made even more tragic by their night of friendship.
