This edgy drama in the vein of DANGEROUS MINDS stars D.L. Hughley (SCARY MOVIE 3) as Ben, a teacher down on his luck and trying to get his career back on track after a troubled past. He accepts the only job that`s offered to him, teaching literature to inmates in a struggling program at a state prison. Faced with a hard-nosed bunch of inmates who have lived their whole lives on the streets, Ben recognizes their potential for expression, and the catharsis and personal validation it can bring them. Through some unusual teaching methods, Ben manages to win over the trust of his students, and they begin to create, purging their anger and pain in rap lyrics and poetry rather than the violence they have always been surrounded by. Gabriel (Jose Pablo Cantillo, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE), a teenage drug dealer, even manages to win a poetry slam contest, showing great promise for his future. But disaster strikes in the form of a massive prison riot, which threatens everything Ben has worked for, as well as his life.

Returning to a style of New York City filmmaking reminiscent of Jim Jarmusch's (DEAD MAN) early efforts, Todd Verow's SHUCKING THE CURVE is the tale of an awestruck small town girl discovering the city for the first time. Selling her car to afford the trip, Suzanne Fountain (Bonnie Dickenson) finds herself caught up in a whirlwind of social activity as soon as she arrive on the Lower East Side. All the freaks come out in force to inadvertently welcome Suzanne, and seem to emerge from the shadows at her every turn. When she finally settles on an apartment, Suzanne becomes fast friends with Kathy (Leanne Whitney), who appears to live in the hallway of Suzanne's building. Further journeys through the mayhem of the heady New York City nights ensue, with the duo discovering drugs, murder, and the fashion world. When the daughter of devoutly religious midwestern businessman Jake Van Dorn (George C. Scott) disappears on a trip to Los Angeles sponsored by the family's Calvinist church, Jake's search for his daughter, Niki (Season Hubley), leads him into a shocking world of pornography. HARDCORE, an early venture from writer-director Paul Schrader, features what may be Scott's best performance (this side of PATTON) as a man shattered by his daughter's descent into the world of porn. In California, Jake hires Andy Mast (Peter Boyle), a sleazy Hollywood private detective, to help him find Niki; the two descend into the sordid realm of the hardcore sex industry, determined to retrieve her.
