An underrated film penned by Oscar winner (Moonstruck) John Patrick Shanley about a modern day Sherlock Holmes asked by his policeman brother to discover a serial killer's identity before he strikes again.
His romance with the Mayor's daughter has a touch of poetry that lifts the film above formula.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Full Frame - 1.33Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital Stereo - English Dolby Digital Stereo - French Dolby Digital Mono - Spanish Trailers - 1. A deadly tale about misguided love and the trouble it unleashes, Jean-Pierre Denis's MURDEROUS MAIDS is a surprisingly tender recounting of the Papin Affair. Based on actual events, the film tells the story of the Papin sisters, Christine (Sylvie Testud) and Lea (Julie-Marie Parmentier), two young women living in the1930s in Le Mans, France. Christine, the elder of the two siblings, is overly protective of Lea, an innocent, wide-eyed youngster. As her relationship with her mother deteriorates completely, Christine goads Lea into shunning her mother as well. The pair finally secures employment as maids at the home of the Lancelins. During the day, they perform the menial daily chores that are required of them, while at night, they indulge in a passionate affair. As Christine's mind begins to spin out of control, she becomes more and more reliant on the presence and support of Lea. Meanwhile, Mrs. Lancelin begins to sense the true reason for their inseparability. One night, returning home early with her daughter, she surprises Christine, who takes out her fears on the unsuspecting Lancelins, separating the sisters once and for all. Inspired by Paulette Houdyer's book, as well as Jean Genet's classic play, Denis's film finds the truth in the tragic story, without resorting to mere shock tactics.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 SurroundAdditional Release Material: Interviews With Actress Sylvie Testud and Director Jean-Pierre Denis Theatrical TrailersText/Image Galleries: Janet Flaner's 1933 Vanity Fair Article Recounting the Actual Events Photos From Newspapers of the Time

IN THEATRES: JUNE 3, 2005 (NY)Troy Garrity shines as the mentally challenged Albert Burroughs in Allan Mindel`s debut feature film, MILWAUKEE, MINNESOTA. Set in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the well-written tale centers on Albert, a 30-year-old who lives with his domineering mother (Debra Monk) and works for a grizzled old man (Bruce Dern) in a copy store. Albert has amassed a small fortune winning ice-fishing contests, as he has the unique ability to
hear
the fish. When his mother is killed after some suspicious characters show up in town--brother and sister con team Tuey (Alison Folland) and Stan (Hank Harris), and traveling salesman Jerry (Randy Quaid)--it suddenly seems that everyone is after Albert`s money, taking advantage of his kindness and the state of his mind. Things are amiss in Mindel`s small-town America, which features rape, murder, grifters, transvestites, and lots of lies and deception.Garrity, the son of politician Tom Hayden and actress Jane Fonda, is a standout; audiences will immediately fall for his intelligent, warm, moving portrayal of a simpleminded young man. Strong support is offered by an excellent cast, including Dern, Monk, and Quaid as well as a special appearance by Josh Brolin and Warhol Factory veteran Holly Woodlawn.
