Director Robert Benton brings Philip Roth's 2000 novel THE HUMAN STAIN to the screen in this lavish production, with expert cinematography from Jean-Yves Escoffier. Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) is a light-skinned African-American college professor who has kept his true racial identity secret for the majority of his life. His career comes to a sudden halt when he makes a comment that is misinterpreted as a racial slur. Soon after he is fired, Silk hooks up with young Faunia Farely (Nicole Kidman), a local janitor. The affair with Farely, who is almost half Silk's age, becomes small-town gossip, and attracts the attention of Farely's psychotic ex-husband, Lester (Ed Harris). As Lester seeks vengeance, still angry at his ex-wife, Silk must make some tough decisions about his affair with Farely, leading to the film's nail-biting conclusion.Benton draws incredibly convincing performances from his two lead actors. Hopkins ably transcends his Caucasian ethnicity to play an African American. And Kidman fully embraces her character as a downtrodden janitor who is determined to rise beyond her humble beginnings. The two actors conquer the difficult subject matter, offering fascinating commentary on racial mores and relationship issues.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33

Edward Scissorhands (DVD) Edward Scissorhands (DVD) » Edward Scissorhands (DVD)

In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban fairy tale with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), discovers the half-finished experiment--a man/monster named Edward (Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically by Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old abandoned castle. The scientist died before replacing the shy man's large shears with real hands. When Peg attempts to bring Edward into her suburban world, to live among her skeptical family (husband Alan Arkin and daughter Winona Ryder) and gossipy neighbors, his hands--dangerous yet capable of creating things of great beauty--make for some awkward, funny, and poignant situations:
Edward as a topiary gardener, Edward as a cutting-edge hair stylist. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is a story about tolerance, difference, and creativity as much as it is a story of a young man's coming of age (the young man in question is, of course, a monster).
In the ironically surreal world of Edward's suburban community, he must try to find his place in it, and in the world at large.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital 4.1 - English Dolby Surround - English Dolby Surround - French THX Mastered AudioAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentaries - 1. Off the Map (DVD) Off the Map (DVD) » Off the Map (DVD)

Veteran actor Campbel Scott (ROGER DODGER, DYING YOUNG) directs this startling, quietly sparkling film, set in the achingly beautiful desert of New Mexico. There, a family lives a life withdrawn from contact with society, completely independent and self-sufficient. Patriarch Charley (Sam Elliott) lives with his strong, beautiful wife Arlene (Joan Allen) and their daughter Bo (Valentina de Angelis), and together they live off the land and Charley's veteran's check. They are surprised one day by a visit from a bumbling IRS agent, William Gibbs, who has been sent to conduct an audit. His experience of the family's ranch takes an unconventional turn, however, as he suffers a bee sting to which he is highly allergic. Forced to recuperate in the home from which he came to extract money, the agent is soon enamored by all that he discovers there. Not overly romanticized, however, life on the farm has its own problems, as existential ennui finds it fullest expression in the extreme depression that has put Charley into a near-catatonic state. Gorgeously shot and unfolding at a leisurely pace, Scott's subtle drama benefits from remarkable performances from all the characters, including charming newcomer de Angelis, a shamanistic turn from Allen, and quintessential stoic cowboy Elliott. Recalling Terrence Malick in its dreamy sense of place and reliance on voice-over (an adult Bo played by Amy Brenneman (FEAR, THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER), OFF THE MAP is a delicate tale that offers a hidden treasure of emotion.

After his sister is injured in an accident, Jack Flange (Alex O`Lachlan) must leave Sydney for the small town of Brooklyn, New South Wales, to care for her. Here, on the winding Hawkesbury River, a population of fishermen and eccentrics live a simple life. Though he finds work with Brownie (David Field), an oyster farmer with a failing marriage, Jack robs a fish market and mails himself the money to help with his sister`s medical expenses--but in a freak accident, the money falls into the river. Instead of thinking the money is simply lost, he theorizes that it has gone to support the expensive shoe habit of sexy local cleaning woman, Pearl (Diana Glenn)--but as he attempts to find out the truth, he begins to fall in love with her. With OYSTER FARMER, first-time writer/director Anna Reeves has crafted a story that may be safely placed in the fish-out-of-water genre, but wisely sidesteps the genre`s stereotypical cutesiness by writing characters made of true guts and grit and infusing the proceedings with atypical saltiness and sexiness. Newcomers Lachlan and Glenn are appealing screen presences, but character actors Field and Jim Norton (as Brownie`s father, Mumbles)--along with the stunning aerial shots of the Hawkesbury--are the true heart of the film.
