Molly (Elisabeth Shue) is a functioning autistic who has been living isolated in a government facility for the last fifteen years, after the death of her parents. When the government closes the facility down, her brother Buck (Aaron Eckhart), is forced to take her in, much to his dissatisfaction. When Molly is invited to participate in a radical new surgery to possibly revoke the symptoms of autism, Buck reluctantly agrees. In Fritz Lang's first American film, a young engaged couple, Joe (Spencer Tracey) and Katherine (Sylvia Sydney), are saying a sad good bye, parting for as long as it will take them to save up enough money to start a life together. Eventually the day arrives when the two are to be reunited, but en-route to see Katherine, Joe is picked up by an ornery police officer in search of a kidnapper. Among bizarre extenuating circumstances and circumstantial evidence, all signs point to Joe as the culprit, and he is immediately taken to jail. The news of the kidnapper's capture spreads quickly through town, and soon an angry mob gathers outside the jail. The mob quickly becomes violent and burns down the jail with Joe apparently inside. Shortly thereafter, the real kidnapper is captured, and the local citizens fall under the scrutiny of the law, which accuses them of Joe's murder. Lang's favorite themes-- media and the masses--come to play as the film follows the strange story to its unusual and astonishing conclusion. This legendary dramatization of the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I of England and the Duke of Essex is a spectacle of costume and melodrama, almost as famous today for the offscreen battles as the onscreen fireworks. Bette Davis (OF HUMAN BONDAGE, ALL ABOUT EVE) shines in the role of Elizabeth, while Essex is played by the swashbuckling Errol Flynn (ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN, IN THE WAKE OF THE BOUNTY). Davis was infamously disapproving of her costar's unprofessional attitude, while he found her to be insufferably self-important. Nonetheless, the picture is stunning and the tale is timeless--a tragedy of epic proportions. Elizabeth is an aging queen in love with the Earl, but when he sinks the Spanish Armada and squanders ships and loot needed by England, she replaces him with his rival, Sir Walter Raleigh (Vincent Price, HOUSE OF WAX, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS). Essex is furious and retreats to his family's estate, and the Queen must coax him back to court. Their relationship is fraught by sabotage from all sides, and through the intervention of Essex's enemies the two are turned against one another.
