Quoting from a score of tough-guy classics like THE HUSTLER, MEAN STREETS, and ON THE WATERFRONT, Mars Callahan writes, directs, and stars in this saga of pool and redemption. Johnny (Callahan) is a natural ace player held back from the pro circuit by his greedy mentor Joe (Chazz Palminteri), who wants to keep him hustling in smoky pool halls. At the encouragement of his law student girlfriend (Alison Eastwood), Johnny tries to go straight. Of course he has a kid brother (Michael Rosenbaum) who idealizes him in all the wrong ways; when he winds up in big trouble, only Johnny can bail him out by going back to the life he left behind.
Christopher Walken shows up and steals the show as a strange lawyer who bankrolls Johnny against Joe in the big game climax. Rick Schroder plays the pro Johnny must beat to save the day; Rod Steiger is the hall's grizzled proprietor.POOLHALL JUNKIES is a lot of fun. Callahan's infectious love of the game shines through in every spectacular shot and Walken is at his bizzaro best. Agnes Bruckner delivers an impressive, assured performance with BLUE CAR, an affecting coming-of-age drama from Karen Moncrieff. Bruckner is Meg, a beautiful teenager who is desperate to find inspiration and guidance in her otherwise tumultuous life. At an early age, her father left her family behind. Now, there is only her edgy mother, Diane (Margaret Colin), and her increasingly aloof younger sister, Lily (Regan Arnold). Salvation appears to arrive in the presence of Mr. Auster (David Strathairn), Meg's reserved English teacher who takes an interest in Meg's poetry. It isn't long before both Meg and Mr. Auster begin to take an interest in each other, and as an approaching national poetry competition brings the two closer together, deeper feelings emerge. But Meg eventually learns a painful secret about Mr. Auster, which shatters her impressions of the man, and threatens to push her over the edge forever.Moncrieff, a former television actress turned writer-director, turns her potentially formulaic material into ultimately moving entertainment. This can be attributed to the performances of her lead actors. As the conflicted Meg, Bruckner is a perfect blend of budding sexuality and adolescent bitterness. A drama weaved around the tale of a director whose fortunes in the film industry have plummeted, INSERTS (1975) features early appearances from acclaimed actors Richard Dreyfuss and Bob Hoskins. Dreyfuss plays the unfortunate director who enjoyed a heyday in Hollywood during the silent era, but has failed to make a successful leap into the world of talkies. Living a secluded life in his Hollywood home, the former star takes solace in a meagre career in the adult film industry, which appears to have been undertaken as a substitute for his own sexual impotence.Way ahead of its time, INSERTS unashamed use of graphic sex scenes, nudity, and drug-taking proved less than palatable for cinemagoers in the mid-'70s. It was slapped with an X rating by film censors, which meant commercial suicide and a largely fruitless search for venues who would actually show the film; it even ended up playing in adult movie theaters. But as the art house film circuit established itself the film picked up a belated cult following, and is now fondly remembered as a brave and creative piece of filmmaking that helped pave the way for similarly themed movies such as BOOGIE NIGHTS and THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLINT, both of which were nominated for Academy Awards.
