One of the first films made about the House Committee on Un-American Activities' (HUAC) communist witch hunts of the 1950s, THE FRONT is a bitterly funny look at one of the most notorious periods in modern American history. Woody Allen stars as Howard Prince, a small-time bookie and cashier who is an old high school friend of the successful television writer Alfred Miller. When Miller is blacklisted, he goes to Howard and asks him to front for him, to pose as a writer and sell his scripts to television studios. Soon, Howard is made the head writer of a television series, fronting for other writers, and making more money than he ever had before. Unfortunately, Howard soon becomes the target of a HUAC investigation and is forced to choose between giving up his new lifestyle and making the right moral decision: implicating communists for the government. Frequently hilarious, THE FRONT is also a very personal film for its director, Martin Ritt, and its writer, Walter Bernstein, both of whom were blacklisted during the 1950s.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Pan& Scan - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - English

Laurence Olivier shocked audiences accustomed to seeing him in Shakespeare or period romances when he joined forces with the two defining figures of Great Britain's Angry Young Man cadre, director Tony Richardson and playwright John Osborne, by starring as third-rate vaudevillian Archie Rice in the latter's lacerating play. The arrogant, hypocritical, and lecherous performer is playing out the remainder of his days leading a revue at a moribund seaside resort. In the pathetic quality of his singing, acting, and humor, the declining Archie is clearly intended by its author as a symbol of post-WWII England. Yet he still has enough energy to make life as miserable for his family as it is for him. He cajoles his son, Frank (Alan Bates), into volunteering to fight in Suez, against his will; bilks his dying father for the budget for his next show; and cheats on his alcoholic wife, Phoebe (Brenda de Banzie), with beauty contest winner Tina Lapford (Shirley Anne Field). When his daughter arrives unexpectedly, Archie is forced to face the fabric of deceit he has created to survive. Olivier leads a stellar cast in this still-unsettling film, playing the repellent Archie with memorable intensity.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.66Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - English

Director Jerzy Antczak (NIGHTS AND DAYS) guides this abrasive drama through some dark alleyways of the human psyche, focusing on an affair between legendary musician Frederic Chopin, and feminist scribe Aurore Dupin (AKA George Sand). The relationship showed a side of Chopin not often recognized by music lovers, and Antczak chronicles the trouble he caused to both his family, and ultimately to Sand in this painful portrayal of a talented man who was a slave to his own passion. A selection of Chopin's music is brilliantly used throughout CHOPIN: DESIRE FOR LOVE, with contributions coming from Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Pamela Frank, and many others.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33
