Set in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1952 during the French Indochina war, THE QUIET AMERICAN is based on the mystery story by Graham Greene, and directed by Phillip Noyce. A middle-aged British reporter for the London Times, Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine), has been working in Vietnam, covering politics and enjoying the local culture. He lives with a beautiful young woman, Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen), a taxi dancer who he rescued from that undesirable profession. He cannot marry her, because he is already married to a Catholic woman in London who does not believe in divorce. But he truly loves her. When a young American doctor, Alden Pyle (Brendan Fraser), falls in love with Phuong, threatening to take her from Fowler, everything changes. Samuel Fuller's honest, visionary pulp film uses an insane asylum as a metaphor for American society. The inmates include a black man who thinks he's a white supremacist, a Korean War Vet who thinks he's a Civil War Confederate general, and a nuclear physicist who has reverted to childhood. This microcosm, which Fuller created in 1963, has lost none of its force over time. In addition, the film's treatment of journalistic hubris foreshadows the contemporary problem of media becoming corrupted by its compliant association with governmental elites. In SHOCK CORRIDOR, a journalist (Peter Breck) hoping to get a scoop on a murder suspect has himself committed to a mental institution where the inmates have information on the culprit. As the film unfolds, the purity of the hero's mission is undercut by his own monomaniacal ego. Things go terribly awry, and although he gets his story, he pays a high price for his success.The Home Vision Cinema VHS version is digitally remastered with original color sequences and letterboxed at the original aspect ratio. A melancholy, well-crafted drama set in 1920s Ireland, THE LAST SEPTEMBER is based on the popular novel by Bowen. The setting is the estate of an aging English couple (Gambon and Smith) in County Cork, who welcome into their lives an eclectic cast of characters, including their outgoing niece (Hawes) and scholarly nephew (Slinger). They are joined by a married pair (Wilson and Birkin) who are currently homeless, and another precocious woman (Shaw).
