Power and sex are at the heart of this adaptation of Harold Robbins's soap opera bestseller, set in the 1930s and loosely based on the life of Howard Hughes. George Peppard stars as Jonas, a hard-drinking young aircraft tycoon who starts going off the deep end when his tyrannical father (Leif Erikson) dies. After reclaiming the girl his father stole from him (Carroll Baker), Jonas starts producing movies--at first to help his old friend, a silent-film star struggling to make the transition to sound (Alan Ladd) but eventually to placate his out of control ego. After numerous failed marriages and ever-worsening alcoholism, Jonas finally makes an effort to face the demons of his past, but it may be too late.Director Edward Dmytryk (THE YOUNG LIONS, RAINTREE COUNTY) enlivens this sprawling film with his sense of character and period detail. Peppard is fine as the lead, and Alan Ladd unusually accessible as the aging cowboy star, Nevada Smith. The women in the cast, though, have little to do except manipulate the men for money and sex. Fans of this sort of thing, however, should find such shallowness merely part of the racy, sudsy fun.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital Mono - English Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene Selection

Director Peter Bogdanovich revisits small-town Texas life in the long-awaited sequel to his 1971 masterpiece THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. It's been over 30 years since Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges), Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms), and Jacy Farrow (Cybill Shepherd) graduated from high school. Life is still bittersweet as the town prepares to host the county's centennial celebration. Duane struck it rich with oil, but is saddled with $12 million in debt and a shop-a-holic wife, Karla (Annie Potts). To make matters worse, his dysfunctional children are out of control: his teenage son has affairs with older, married women; his daughter is on a continuous carousel of divorces and engagements; and the twins are egg throwing, smart-mouthed adolescents. Duane himself is a local legend with the ladies, but he's completely thrown when Jacy, who's been living abroad, returns to his sleepy hometown to mourn the death of her child. Sonny, meanwhile, has become a local politician and businessman, but is increasingly forgetful and suffers from all too realistic hallucinations. Other cast members reprising their original roles from the first film include Cloris Leachman as Ruth Popper, Eileen Brennan as Genevieve Morgan, and Randy Quaid as Lester Marlow. TEXASVILLE, like its prequel, is based on a Larry McMurtry novel.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - English Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Petrified Forest Petrified Forest » Petrified Forest

This heartfelt drama about a gangster on the run is the film for which Humphrey Bogart first received wide-scale recognition. Bogie and costar Leslie Howard were both brought on board after appearing in the successful stage play by Pulitzer prize-winner Robert E. Sherwood. Director Archie Mayo follows the original closely to create a fast-paced and gripping suspense drama with existential motifs. Leslie Howard plays a perfect gentleman--a lonely intellectual in search of meaning. When he lands in a deserted cafi, he finds what he`s looking for in the form of young Bette Davis, whose character yearns for the artistic climate of gay Paris. But both Howard and Davis are in for a bumpy ride when dangerous gangster played by Bogart takes over, holding up the joint at gunpoint. The small group of hostages take turns telling their tales, fearing death, while Bogie plots to reunite with his gang and his girl. Few films in history can stand up to THE PETRIFIED FOREST, which combines the words of literary giant Robert E. Sherwood with the sizzling performances of Howard, Davis, and Bogart.

Saddest Music In the World Saddest Music In the World » Saddest Music In the World

Guy Maddin`s films are gritty, gorgeous, darkly daffy, and ultimately surreal, and THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD may be the finest example of this Canadian director`s unique artistry. He takes a macabre storyline, blends it with brilliant performances, edits to perfection, and creates pure celluloid magic. Dots, bumps, fuzzy static, imperfections, blurring, or shading literally fill the screen with texture--making every frame a cinematic painting.

In 1933 Winnipeg, a contest sponsored by a local beer company has attracted visitors from around the world. Competing for a $25,000 prize, the contestants are all trying to procure The Saddest Music in the World. The host and judge of the competition is the legless owner of the beer company, Lady Port-Huntly (Isabella Rossellini), a former beauty who suffered a grotesque surgical accident, and who hides her own sadness under a platinum-blond wig. Meanwhile, her former lover, the American Chester Kent (Mark McKinney), has arrived with his nymphomaniac girlfriend, Narcissa (Maria de Medeiros), who suffers from amnesia. Chester`s brother, a pale and tortured man with a strange skin condition, and his neurotic father, also enter the competition. They are joined by musicians from Africa, Siam, Mexico, and Scotland, all of whom offer phenomenal performances of nationalistic tunes. This is really only the tip of the iceberg, as Maddin`s film--its story and its visual thrills--includes details and subtleties that can only be understood by watching it. A masterful work of entirely original art, THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD is simply a must-see.

Tom Shadyac's (ACE VENTURA) film tells the true story of Hunter Patch Adams (Robin Williams), an aspiring doctor in the 1970's who attempted to treat his patients with a medicine that modern science had totally disregarded: humor. After a stint in a mental hospital where he discovers his need to help others, a young Patch enters medical school. There he develops his own methods of reaching patients as an antidote to the the pomposity he witnesses in his instructors and fellow students. While his patients and fellow staff members appreciate his approach, the powers-that-be frown upon his unschooled methods and attempt to prevent him from practicing. Philip Seymour Hoffman (MAGNOLIA) and Monica Potter (ALONG CAME A SPIDER) co-star in this crowd pleaser based on a book by Adams.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital 5.0 - English Dolby Digital 5.0 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
