This television miniseries tells the true story of John A. Walker, Jr. (chillingly played by the underrated Powers Booth), a U.S. Navy communications officer who sold top secret military codes to the Soviet Union during the Cold War years. Fueled by greed and armed with the most high-level security information, Walker built an elaborate spy network over a period of 17 years, enlisting the help of family members and military buddies alike. Walker's treason was finally brought to light by his wife Barbara (Lesley Ann Warren) after he sought to involve his own children in the espionage. Taking its title from the stenographer's record in a criminal investigation, Sidney Lumet's brutal look at police corruption peers at the rotten center of crime-fighting institutions and spotlights one man's naive attempt to intervene. Timothy Hutton is young District Attorney Al Reilly, called in on a cut and dry case. In the seemingly simple investigation of the shooting of a Puerto Rican drug lord by supposed model cop Brennan (Nick Nolte), Reilly discovers telling inconsistencies and delves further. Despite the stern advice from Chief of Homicide Quinn to resolve the case and quickly clear Brennan, the older cop's suspicious behavior and conflicting stories spur Reilly to delve further. Reilly's former fiancee, Nancy, complicates matters because she is now involved with the prime witness, Bobby Texador (Armand Assante).
With this emotional baggage, Reilly uncovers a vast web of corruption stretching from Manhattan to Puerto Rico that leads all the way to Quinn. Brennan realizes that Reilly is on to him, and he becomes ruthless, stopping at nothing to prevent the truth from surfacing. An East German film from 1950, SUN SEEKERS courted controversy after it was banned in the Soviet Union due to its portrayal of relations between the Germans and the USSR. Set during the postwar period, the story follows two men who find themselves working in a uranium mine after being arrested. They meet some fascinating, and brutal, characters there, all of whom are unwittingly aiding the arms race as the uranium they are mining helps fuel a new set of nuclear weapons.
