Nine Emmy awards were given to this masterful production of the fictitious account of life from a 110-year-old slave.
The script covers the life of Miss Jane Pittman (Cicely Tyson) from her days as a slave during the the Civil War to the start of the civil rights movement in the 1960's. The scene when she drinks from the white's only water fountain due to the Jim Crow laws in the segregated south is one of the most defining moments in the film. Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33:1Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Featurette - Presentation of Lifetime Achievement Award to Cicely Tyson at 2001 National Black Theatre FestivalInteractive Features: Scene Access

Hester Street (DVD) Hester Street (DVD) » Hester Street (DVD)

The desire to shed or suppress all traces of one's original culture has been a primal experience of nearly all immigrants; Joan Micklin Silver's adaptation of Abraham Cahan's story makes clear that it's a process edged with pathos. Carol Kane stars as Gitl, an Eastern European Jew who arrives with her child on Ellis Island in 1896 to join her husband, Jake (Stephen Keats). She is surprised to discover that Jake has abandoned the mores of his culture by cutting off his beard and earlocks, and he's adopted the mannerisms of his new country, including a new girlfriend (Dorrie Kavanaugh) who runs a dance hall. Gitl, unwilling to part with traditions so easily, creates a rift in the marriage that is difficult to overcome. Kane, who was nominated for an Oscar, and Micklin Silver, in her directorial debut, collaborate to high-caliber effect in this touching, amazingly painstaking evocation of immigrant life on New York's Lower East Side in the 1890s.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.78Monaural - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Kiss of Death (DVD) Kiss of Death (DVD) » Kiss of Death (DVD)

KISS OF DEATH opens with ex-convict Jimmy Kilmartin (David Caruso) attempting to distance himself from his shady past. His cousin, Ronny (Michael Rapaport), shows up at his door begging for help with one more heist, and Jimmy agrees to participate against his better judgment. Things go sour when a detective is shot, and Jimmy is left to take the fall. As Jimmy's hopes for a normal life with his wife (Helen Hunt) and daughter fade, he becomes a pawn of the police in their attempts to bring down a psychotic gangster named Little Junior (Nicolas Cage).Caruso and a pumped-up, supremely menacing Cage highlight a spectacular cast that also features Samuel L. Jackson as the cop who becomes Jimmy's solitary ally and Stanley Tucci as a Machiavellian district attorney. Novelist Richard Price supplies the screenplay, and director Barber Schroeder (SINGLE WHITE FEMALE) ensures that KISS OF DEATH, based loosely on the 1947 film of the same name, unfolds with the grooved precision of a well-made watch while bristling at every turn with the volatile life of a vividly imagined criminal underworld.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseDual SideSide One:WidescreenAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
