Captain Cooney (Eddie Albert) is a bombastic, but incompetent, military leader who jeopardizes the lives of the men under his control. His lapdog of a colonel (Lee Marvin) tries his best to sweep Cooney's errors under the rug, but soon the dastardly leaders have a problem on their hands in the form of Lt. Costa (Jack Palance). An independent coming-of-age drama, MELINDA'S WORLD is a distinctly American tale of growing up sheltered in the 1950s Midwest. With the natural beauty of Illinois as a backdrop, this film tells the tale of Melinda, an adolescent girl whose family are members of a conservative religious group. Melinda is forbidden from taking part in many of the activities that other girls her age do, and so finds herself mostly lonely and finding joy in little aspects of life. But her life is changed forever when various townspeople help her to experience the aspects of life that others take for granted, giving her reason to question and perhaps even reject the ways of her parents. This leaves Melinda faced with a choice between ways of life that she may be too young to properly answer.

Based on the novel by Henry James, THE EUROPEANS takes place in 1840s New England where a cultured but nearly destitute sister and brother, raised in Europe, arrive at the doorstep of their rich but innocently isolated American cousins. Hoping to exchange her sophistication for financial stability, Eugenia (Lee Remick) begins a manipulative wooing of bachelor Robert Acton (Robin Ellis) while her bohemian brother, Felix (Tim Woodward), falls for Gertrude Wentworth (Lisa Eichorn). The puritanical Acton is attracted to Eugenia's artful ways but cannot find it within himself to trust her overt sensuality.With sumptuous cinematography, director James Ivory subtly articulates the emotions that surface in this Jamesian battle between cosmopolitan mores and stony New England rectitude. Producer Ismail Merchant had difficulty finding financial backing in the United States, and THE EUROPEANS was eventually funded by England's National Film Finance Corporation. However, when it was chosen as the only British entry at the Cannes Film Festival, the British film community disassociated itself from the movie, considering it not to be British enough. The weather is getting hotter, and photographer L.B. Jefferies (Jimmy Stewart) is stuck in his apartment with a broken leg and nothing to do--that is, nothing to do but spy on his neighbors through their open windows across the way in the apartment complex. There's an attractive and scantily clad dancer, a songwriter, a lonely woman, and the Thorwalds (Raymond Burr and Irene Winston), a bickering couple, among others. But when Mrs. Thorwald disappears, Jefferies is sure that something's wrong. Soon, despite the warnings of his girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly), and his motherly nurse, Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jefferies has out his binoculars and telephoto lens and is studying his neighbor like a bug under glass. However, looking in from the outside might not be as safe as Jefferies assumes. REAR WINDOW is not only a gripping story of murder and suspense, it is a celebrated allegory on the nature of film itself, a story in which the audience watches Jefferies watch the story unfold.
