Covers the period from 1960-1972; Produced and released in 1973.Shot on location on the crime-filled streets of New York City, Sidney Lumet's unflinching adaptation of Peter Maas's best-selling book is a rousing portrait of courage in the face of insidious corruption. This is a motif that Lumet would continue to mine in later films, including 1981's PRINCE OF THE CITY and 1997's NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN. Al Pacino is forcefully real as Frank Serpico, an independent young recruit entering the police force in the late 1960s, fulfilling a childhood dream. The good old boys of the NYPD lose no time in initiating Serpico into the ways of cutting corners, forging documents, and taking payoffs from local gambling operations and narcotic rings. His refusal to take illegal protection money and his counterculture lifestyle make Serpico a target for harassment by his unified and powerful peers. Lumet hones in on the evocative details of Serpico's personal struggles and inner turmoil as his obsessive fight for truth begins to have disastrous effects on his personal life and threatens his safety. SERPICO is a stellar example of gritty'70s filmmaking, featuring another electrifying performance from Pacino.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital Mono - English, FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailer - 1. Hal Ashby's film of Woody Guthrie's autobiography, BOUND FOR GLORY, recounts the protest singer's life starting when he's a young man with a wife and two children, trying to find work as a sign painter in the Dust Bowl-ravaged Texas of the 1930s. He leaves his wife, Mary (Melinda Dillon), with her family and, like thousands of others, rides the rails to California. Along the way he sees the brutal treatment of men by the railroad's hired thugs before being thrown into a hard life in the migrant workers camps of the San Fernando Valley. He begins to write songs about everything he's seen and joins Ozark Bule on the radio, not just singing about union organizing, but actually going to meetings and brawling with union-busting goons. When the radio station management, as a result of pressure from its advertisers, tells Woody--who's now attracting a following with his protest songs and ballads about the lives of oppressed people--that he can't do those songs, he gives up the radio program and decides to ride the rails to New York to seek a larger audience for his music. David Carradine, as Guthrie, does his own singing, giving an intimacy to the songs that might have been lost by dubbing. The award-winning cinematography by Haskell Wexler captures both the bleakness of the Great Depression and the beautiful grandeur of America, exactly what Guthrie expressed in his songs.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingKeep CaseWidescreenTheatrical TrailerCollectible Booklet

The Usual Suspects (SE/DVD) The Usual Suspects (SE/DVD) » The Usual Suspects (SE/DVD)

Director Bryan Singer's labyrinthine crime drama centers on five career criminals (played by Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, and Stephen Baldwin) who meet after being rounded up for a standard police line-up. Upon their release, the men band together to pull off an intricate heist involving $3 million worth of emeralds. Their success brings them to the attention of the enigmatic Keyser Soze, an unseen, nefarious, and mythic underworld crime figure who coerces them into pulling off an important and highly dangerous job. The scenes that follow make THE USUAL SUSPECTS one of the most fascinating crime thrillers in cinema history.Working from the Oscar-winning screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie, Singer adroitly tells the complex story through flashbacks, cross-cutting, and voice-over narration. Such nimble handling of the intricacies of the nonlinear narrative adds to the suspense, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats until the clever, satisfying finale. Singer's expertise in the technical aspects of filmmaking--his use of a dioptic filter to keep two close-up faces in focus, as well as his inventive use of six-frame step printing--helped him earn his reputation as a visually impressive and stylish director. Filled with excellent performances from veteran actors (Kevin Spacey won his first Academy Award for his breakthrough role as Verbal Kint), THE USUAL SUSPECTS placed Singer squarely on the cinematic map.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingCommentary by the director and screenwriterKeep Case

High School Confidential! (DVD) High School Confidential! (DVD) » High School Confidential! (DVD)

This camp classic tries to keep a straight face as a sizzling expose of American high schools. New kid Tony (Russ Tamblyn) talks crazy slang, makes a pass at Miss Jergens (Joan Staples), scores some grass, drag races against a kid played by Michael Landon, and outclasses the other big man on the schoolyard played by John Drew Barrymore, all in his first day. As it turns out, Tony is an undercover narcotics agent, and really wants to help these poor kids, especially poor Arlene (Jan Sterling), a sweet girl who seems doomed now that she's hard her first puff of mary jane. He starts working with, and falling for, Miss Jergens, but Tony's horny aunt (the busty Mamie Van Doren) keeps interrupting his homework by trying to seduce him. There's even beatnik poetry, and Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester from the ADDAM'S FAMILY) as Mr. A, the top man of the dope ring. Jerry Lee Lewis swings by on a flat bed truck to bang out the title tune on his piano. This is the pinnacle of 1950s rock-and-roll, juvenile delinquent movies, and an essential addition to any camp aficionado's library.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull FrameAudio: Dolby Digital - English
