A writer for the television series TALES FROM THE CRYPT decided to concoct a similar film for children ranging in age from 6 to 11, a group that doesn't have many real horror movies tailored especially for them. In place of the Crypt Keeper, a countrified talking corpse with a bushy moustache dubbed Gator Butt Willie introduces the three tales. One story involves Mad Martin, a magician who enjoys turning children into poultry or vermin; another features a haunted house teeming with colorful monsters; and there's a campfire story thrown in as a bonus.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33

Jackpot (DVD) Jackpot (DVD) » Jackpot (DVD)

Twin brothers Mark and Michael Polish, who collaborated on the cult hit, TWIN FALLS, IDAHO, a quirky but contemplative film about a woman in love with a Siamese twin, move in a slightly different direction with their follow-up, JACKPOT. The title of the film can be taken ironically, as JACKPOT documents the career path of Sunny Holiday (Jon Gries), who left his wife (Daryl Hannah) and daughter to tour as a karaoke singer. His manager, Les (Garrett Morris of Saturday Night Live fame), tries to keep Sunny out of trouble (especially with women), but his career advice is frequently off the mark. A singer of minimal talent, Sunny manages to win very few contests. JACKPOT is an odd but engaging comedy. The Polish brothers have even cast the film eccentrically with talented 1970s and 1980s TV stars. In addition to Morris are Peggy Lipton, Crystal Bernard, Mac Davis, and Anthony Edwards. Playing two losers chasing an impossible dream, Gries and Morris have an entertaining rapport. JACKPOT was shot on a Sony 24P digital video camera (also used to shoot STAR WARS: EPISODE 2), and the film looks great, capturing the grimy details of a low-budget life on the road.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenFull ScreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital 2.0 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Kramer Vs. Kramer (DVD) Kramer Vs. Kramer (DVD) » Kramer Vs. Kramer (DVD)

Robert Benton's moving and well-observed adaptation of Avery Corman's novel about the aftermath of divorce stars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep as the separating couple, Ted and Joanna Kramer. When dutiful wife and mother Joanna decides to leave Ted, an advertising executive, she also leaves him with the responsibility of caring for their young son, Billy (Justin Henry). The situation proves to be especially difficult since the workaholic father has never really taken care of the boy and, in truth, barely knows him. Things are rough at first, but as the two become accustomed to life without Joanna and Ted's caretaking skills improve, father and son finally develop a relationship. As Ted devotes more time to his son and less to his work, however, the latter suffers, and Ted's subsequent firing coincides with the return of Joanna, who wants her son back.Despite the titular framing of a custody trial, KRAMER VS. KRAMER steps lightly around the complex issue, essentially concerning itself with the father's discovery of the joys and travails of being a parent. Hoffman and Streep turn in exceptional Academy Award-winning performances, and Benton crafts a memorable exploration of parenthood by wisely focusing on the tiny dramas of everyday life--such as the classic, heartbreaking scene in which Ted, on his first morning as a single father, tries (and miserably fails) to make french toast for his son--to capture the essence of a precious relationship.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital Mono - English Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailer - 1. RUNAWAY JURY: Director Gary Fleder (THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD, KISS THE GIRLS) tackles best-selling novelist John Grisham's tale of jury manipulation in RUNAWAY JURY. Jury consultant Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman) can spin any jury in favor of his client. At least he always could before. But his latest job may turn out to be his most challenging. As an explosive civil case goes to trial in New Orleans, Fitch thinks he has arranged for the perfect jury and has the verdict sealed in favor of his client, a gun manufacturer. Soon, however, he starts receiving phone calls from the mysterious Marlee (Rachel Weisz), who claims that she can turn the jury any way she wants and--for a price--she'll spin it his way. Meanwhile, Marlee is making the same offer to the plaintiff's lawyer, Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman), a Southern gentleman who always plays by the rules. Marlee's insider is Juror #9, Nick Easter (John Cusack), who is working with her to influence his fellow jurors. Are these two just grifters in it for the money, or do they have another agenda? The audience is kept guessing until the very end.HIGH CRIMES: Based on the novel by Joseph Finder, HIGH CRIMES is an engaging courtroom thriller that features standout lead performances by Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. Judd is Claire Kubik, or is she? A successful defense attorney with a seemingly perfect life, Claire is shocked to discover that her husband, Tom (Jim Caviezal), has been arrested by the United States Marine Corp. for slaughtering innocent civilians in El Salvador many years before. Not knowing who to believe, Claire eventually accepts her husband's pleas of innocence and sets out to defend him. With the help of wild-card ex-Marine lawyer Charlie Grimes (Freeman) and wet-behind-the-ears Lt. Terrence Embry (Adam Scott), Claire attempts to set the record straight once and for all. But as she uncovers new information that reveals a cover up even she could never have imagined, the stakes are r

The Straight Story (DVD) The Straight Story (DVD) » The Straight Story (DVD)

David Lynch's first foray into the land of Disney and G-ratings is a surprisingly gentle, hopeful, and irony-free crowd pleaser. The film tells the true story of Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth), a 73-year-old man who journeys from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin, on a John Deere lawn mower in order to visit his dying older brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton). The estranged brothers haven't spoken in years because of their stubborn pride, but Lyle's recent stroke convinces Alvin that now is the time to make amends. Along the way he meets a host of interesting characters--including a pregnant runaway teenager, a sad World War II veteran, and a sympathetic priest--affecting them deeply with his unflinching spirit and belief in the power of familial love. As Straight, Farnsworth slips into the role he was born to play with an effortless grace. Sissy Spacek gives a heartbreaking turn as his afflicted daughter, Rose, who looks after her father and mourns for her children, who were cruelly taken away from her after a freak fire threatened their well-being. Angelo Badalamenti's acoustic, string-heavy score, coupled with 81-year-old Freddie Francis's golden cinematography, adds an even deeper grace to Lynch's touching family drama.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen Anamorphic - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailer - Original TheatricalInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus
