In mid-1970s New Waterford on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, an 18-year-old girl without a child is rather unusual--and 15-year-old Mooney Pottie (Liane Balaban, in an auspicious debut) is feeling suppressed by the small-mindedness that surrounds her. Seen as freakish by her family for her incessant reading and a desire to move to New York, Mooney refuses to temper her thirst for knowledge and attend the booze-fueled makeout parties her classmates live for. Enter Lou (Tara Spencer-Naim), a tough boxer's daughter from the Bronx who moves into town with her dance teacher mother (Cathy Moriarty). Before long, Lou is helping Moonie see the town through new eyes, improving Moonie's social life in the process. But when her sympathetic teacher, Cecil Sweeney (Andrew McCarthy), informs Mooney that he has gotten her accepted at an Arts High School in New York, she is prepared to do whatever it takes to escape her oppressive origins. Director Moyle (PUMP UP THE VOLUME, EMPIRE RECORDS) has crafted a sweet, funny slice-of-life/ coming-of-age film, from the debut screenplay by Fish, who wrote the film after attending her high school reunion in New Waterford. ME WITHOUT YOU, directed by Sandra Goldbacher (THE GOVERNESS), follows two girls who promise to be best friends forever. Marina (Anna Friel) is troubled, extroverted, and the product of a broken home, while Holly (Michelle Williams) is a quiet girl who escapes from her overprotective family into a world of books, music, and imagination. As the girls grow up together, their paths diverge but they cling to each other as the one constant in each other's life. Holly also secretly has a strong attraction to Marina's older brother, Nat (Oliver Milburn). Eventually Holly comes to feel trapped by Marina's possessive, controlling friendship, and she realizes that being with Nat is the only way to truly be herself.Filmed with close attention to period detail, Goldbacher anchors each phase of Holly and Marina's friendship with clothes, production design, and especially music, meant to evoke life in Britain from the 1970s and'80s. From Punk and New Wave to the more materialistic Thatcherite era, Friel and Williams portray two girls desperately trying to keep up with the pace of their lives and the world around them. NBC's long-running crime drama Law& Order has succeeded largely because it allows for an innovative, nuanced view of the American legal system from start to finish. Each one-hour show begins with the police investigation of a crime, and for the first half two detectives (here it's Jerry Orbach and Jesse L. Martin) wade through the evidence to come up with a prime suspect. The second half-hour follows the suspect to trial and is told from the District Attorneys' point of view (here played by Sam Waterston and Elisabeth Rohm). Staying topical by taking cases straight from current headlines, Law& Order is no less compelling when seen long after the real-life events have faded from the headlines, thanks in large part to its terrific cast (which includes S. Epatha Merkerson and Fred Dalton Thompson) and its intelligent, involving writing. Ed Burns gives the best performance of his career in James Foley's fast-moving CONFIDENCE. Foley, who directed David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, has learned much from his mentor, making a who's-conning-whom film worthy of the master of the genre. Burns plays Jake Vig, the leader of a small group of con artists who unknowingly steals money from a sleazy but powerful underworld lord known as King. In order to get his dough back, King forces Vig and his gang to pull off a nearly impossible con that could get nearly everyone involved killed. Meanwhile, Vig is being watched closely by a stubbly federal agent who is following the money.
Foley has put together a terrific cast, including Paul Giamatti and Rachel Weisz as part of Vig's crew, Andy Garcia as the fed, Dustin Hoffman as King, and Luis Guzman and Donal Logue as two cops on the take. As in Mamet's films, the audience will have to keep guessing whose side the characters are on right up until the final shot, never quite knowing who's conning whom.
