EDGES OF THE LORD is a harrowing exploration of historical horrors through the perspective of a child. Haley Joel Osment stars as Romek, a Jewish-Polish boy who is spirited into the countryside to avoid the coming Nazi threat. There, he is integrated into the family of a kind farmer, and the local priest (Willem Dafoe) takes Romek under his wing. Writer-director Yurek Bogayevicz skillfully juxtaposes social upheaval and chaos with the confusion and change associated with adolescence and growing up, and was rewarded the Best Screenplay prize at the Polish Film Festival for his efforts.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33

Based on actual events in 1838, AMISTAD is the story of captured African slaves who took over their transport ship in a bloody revolt with the hopes of returning back to their homeland. After the slaves are caught and imprisoned, their leader, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou), unable to understand the language or court system of America, tries to communicate his desire to return home to his defense lawyer, Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), and former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman). The men plead for help with their groundbreaking court case from former president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins). Steven Spielberg directed this moving film, using as a reference the book by William A. Owens, BLACK MUTINY: THE REVOLT ON THE SCHOONER AMISTAD. The Africans in the movie speak Mende, with subtitles added. West African actor Djimon Hounsou had to learn to speak the language for his role--and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Spielberg shot the film at the State House in Providence, Rhode Island, the seaport in Mystic, Connecticut, and other New England locations.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterbox - 1.85Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Theatrical Trailer Featurette Talent BiosTextPhoto Galleries: Production Notes

Neither documentary nor fiction, Royston Tan`s feature-length version of an earlier, award-winning short is a gritty, disturbing portrait of Singapore`s forgotten youth. The film follows five teenage hoodlums as they go about their daily lives, which involve gangs, drugs, smuggling, violence, and lots of body modifications. The film is shot in a fast-paced, non-linear style that highlights the immediacy of the action, making it all the more unpalatable and difficult to watch. The desperation of the delinquents is immeasurable and captured beautifully (Tan has faced many accusations of exploitation), with stark emotions expressed by actors in situations similar to those of their characters. Their nihilism is explicit, as one boy searches for the perfect location for suicide, and another inflicts wounds on himself in an attempt to expunge the pain and frustration he has already seen in his short life.

Critically-acclaimed director Toshiaki Toyoda brings together an ensemble cast of particular distinction for this, his fourth feature and the prison-escape flick he's always dreamed of making. Nine disparate criminals break out of jail and seek a stashed fortune, supposedly hidden away by a tenth soul left behind in prison; among their ranks they count Torakichi, the group's natural leader who killed his own son; the elusive Michiru, who murdered his own father; Kazuma, a former biker who murdered four of his gang members; Inui, a bomb-crazy epileptic; Shiratori, a doctor who was put away for aiding suicide; the temperamental Ushiyama; former chinpira Shishido; pimp Kiyoshi; and porn entrepreneur Fujio. The film's first hour is comedic, with the interactions between the characters highlighting the individuality of each, allowing the audience to get to know them intimately before switching to pure tragedy in the second half. After the group's original goal meets with disappointment, one by one they set out to pursue their individual peace in a solitary fashion, seeking the lost loved ones to whom they must come clean. Sadly, their efforts at atonement are often met with explosive disaster. Modeled on John Sturges' THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963), 9 SOULS seamlessly incorporates surrealist elements and fast pacing into its hip storyline, creating a daring, innovative drama that expands genre tropes to include a vast range of emotion.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - Japanese Subtitles - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Interviews - 1.
