A group of disaffected youth struggle to find meaning as they skateboard through the backyard pools and strip malls of suburban Texas in LEVELLAND, the directorial debut of frequent Richard Linklater collaborator Clark Walker. Zach (Matt Barr) embarks upon an affair with his high school English teacher Sally (Marie Black) while worrying about his mother's job and his increasingly depressed older brother Nick (Lathan McKay). Derrick (Logan Camp) rebels against his domineering father, who would rather his son play football than waste time skateboarding. Steve (Erik Ostos) hides his immigrant identity while looking for a way out of his family's crushing poverty. And tomboy Betty (Jessica Schwartz) contends with the loneliness and confusion that stems from being the only female in a male-dominated sport. THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH is a dazzling, only-by-DeMille spectacle of life behind the scenes with Ringling Bros.-Barnum and Bailey Circus, the best three-ring circus in the land. The great showman Cecil B. DeMille produced and directed this splashy, colorful look at life under the big top. Charlton Heston stars as Brad Braden, the beloved circus manager who runs a tight ship with integrity and a big heart. In an effort to bring in enough money to guarantee a full tour, Brad hires the Great Sebastian (Cornel Wilde), a daredevil trapeze star, to replace his girlfriend, Holly (Betty Hutton), a beautiful and talented trapeze artist who had been promised the coveted center-ring spot. Sebastian, a suave ladies' man, instantly takes a liking to Holly despite their jealous rivalry. Holly and Sebastian carry on their feud high in the air, with an audience watching, performing a dangerous show of one-upmanship. While the two duel in the air, sparks fly on the ground, and Brad is too busy running the grand show to notice. This gutsy star-studded spectacle was produced in cooperation with Ringling Bros.-Barnum and Bailey circus and filmed in a semidocumentary style, with frequent cuts from the full-scale grandiose circus acts and larger-than-life costumes by the legendary Edith Head to real footage of the daily life on the road for the full-scale traveling operation. Jimmy Stewart costars in a gem of a role, as Buttons the clown, who is hiding from a mysterious past. This cavalcade of jaw-dropping visual splendor, complete with lions, elephants, and an action-packed train wreck of a finale, is DeMille at his grandiose best. The Wild One had been banned in the U.K. 11 years earlier for fear of being a bad influence on the young, but The Leather Boys presents a similar portrait of English juvenile delinquency, this time with more female participation. Sidney J. Furie (The Ipcress File) directs Rita Tushingham (A Taste of Honey, The Knack) as Dot, biker companion to Reggie (Colin Campbell). After being forced to keep their romance a secret, they decide to wed. As young delinquents, however, they are unable to keep faithful to one another, and their relationship turns destructive. Uncharacteristically bleak for the time and unwilling to conform to the sexual mores of their era, The Leather Boys is an entertaining look at youth gone wild. To finance new recording studio equipment, the duo turn to cross-country cocaine dealing, and the body count soars in both LA and New Orleans. Supporting actor Big Pun died of a heart attack before the film's release. Ice Cube, prominent on the cassette box, has a two-scene cameo.
