In a remote Outback outpost, an Anglo lawman and an Aboriginal community leader join forces to avert disaster after a sacred site is desecrated by a deputy and his married white lover. Though the sheriff is beholden to the law of the white fella, the local tribes demand payback, achieved in a bloody ritual. A surprisingly sensitive treatment of Australia's fragile ethnic ecosystem and the conflict between modernity and tribal tradition.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAdditional Release Materials: TrailerInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene AccessText/Photo Galleries: Production Credits& Filmographies.

SKINS, based on the novel by Adrian C. Louis, is the impressive second feature of Native American director Chris Eyre (SMOKE SIGNALS). Filmed on location at the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota reservation in South Dakota, SKINS tells the story of Rudy (Eric Schweig), a policeman, and his older brother Mogie (Graham Greene of THE GREEN MILE), a jobless alcoholic. Mogie had once looked after his kid brother, but his experiences in Vietnam left him a bitter and broken man. Rudy frequently gives money to his mischievous older brother, which Mogie spends on beer. Frustrated with rampant alcoholism and crime on the rez, Rudy becomes a vigilante. While Rudy thinks he's doing the right thing for his people, his extralegal activities lead to tragedy. SKINS is a powerful drama laced with acerbic humor. The film captures the harsh realities of Pine Ridge life with affection and wit, and breaks down negative stereotypes about Native Americans by portraying Mogie as a complex and ultimately very sympathetic human being. Eyre manages to make important points about contemporary Native American life without heavy handedness. His cast is very strong, particularly Greene, who delivers a phenomenal performance in this exceptionally moving and humane film. This film screened in June 2002 in New York City as part of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival copresented by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Human Rights Watch.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Noi (DVD) Noi (DVD) » Noi (DVD)

In a tiny village located in the remote West Fjords of Iceland, Noi lives a strangely quiet life with his grandmother. A 17-year-old afflicted by the typical symptoms of teenage angst, who longs for freedom and independence, Noi makes for an excellent character study. His existence is anything but typical given the challenges that the Icelandic climate presents. Noi must shovel the snow away from the front door of his house in order to even open the door and get out in the morning, and he passes his free time firing a rifle at the mighty ice cycles that hang threateningly from the local hills. When he's not calming his alcoholic father after fits of rage, Noi hangs out at the gas station where the beautiful daughter of the local bookshop owner works. The surprising ending, which puts a very different perspective on this otherwise basic tale of Icelandic adolescence, brings a pensive fatalism to NOI.Director-writer Dagur Kari masterfully directs the small cast of unique characters in this well-paced film, while the numbing photography of perpetual ice and snow, and a superb soundtrack of acoustic music by Slowblow give the film its reflective, somber mood.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Surround Sound 5.1Additional Release Material: Theatrical Trailer Featurette Previews Deleted Scenes

Luther (DVD) Luther (DVD) » Luther (DVD)

Spiritual conviction and radical politics define LUTHER, an historical biography which traces the life and career of Martin Luther, an inspired monk whose writings initiated the Protestant movement in 16th-century Germany. The film follows Luther's induction as a monk to his professorship in Wittenberg, where he eventually authors the 95 Theses. Reacting against Roman-Catholic strategies of bartering salvation for coinage, as well as the institution's hierarchies of religious knowledge and power, Luther throws the proverbial wrench in the system with his seditious writings. His disgust with the Church is only balanced by his love of the scriptures, and he calls on both to defend himself in numerous battles with the Church, recreated with modern-day courtroom drama. The film employs tropes of the father and son, including Luther's relationships with his biological father, his spiritual mentor at the monastery, and God, all of which provide richer textures to the narrative. Populated with dusty, energetic peasants desperate for God and the statesmen who rule them--incidentally decked out in rich red robes or purple gowns--LUTHER rewards the aesthetic impulse with panoramic landscapes, vastly structured church interiors, myriad medieval paintings, and again, the costumes. Spirited in more ways than one, LUTHER provides a dramatic overview to the ultimate Protestant hero, whose radical politics and religious beliefs ushered in an entirely new era of faith and practice.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33
