John Singleton emerged from USC film school with his passionate script already written, and at age 23 he made the film that spawned a score of ghetto dramas. From the opening shot--a sign reading Stop--to the final message of Increase the Peace, Singleton's desire to galvanize his audience is clear. The violence destroying South Central Los Angeles is seen through the eyes of Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.), whose intelligence and common sense would be wasted in the'hood if not for his father, Furious (Laurence Fishburne), who imparts discipline and responsibility to his son. Tre's friends aren't so lucky, though, especially Doughboy (Ice Cube), who has been in and out of institutions since childhood and now sits on his porch with a forty in his hand and a pistol in his waistband. Singleton is ambitious enough to tackle a host of problems, from African American business practices to the bias of the SAT test, but the real power of the film lies in the performances of its principals. Noted filmmaker John Boorman (DELIVERANCE, THE GENERAL, THE TAILOR OF PANAMA) addresses the complex emotional scars leftover from Apartheid in South Africa in IN MY COUNTRY. The events of the film take place during hearings conducted in 1996 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The purpose of the hearings was to shed light on the unfortunate atrocities committed during the time of persecution. Anna Malan (Juliette Binoche) is a native Afrikaner poet whose is covering the hearings for state radio. During the proceedings, she meets Langston Whitfield (Samuel L. Jackson) an American covering the matter for the Washington Post. Initially, the two don't get along. He thinks she shares collective guilt for cruelty that was carried out; she thinks he's a stubborn and ignorant American. Getting past those unfounded first impressions, the two fall in love.Adapted from author Antjie Krog's memoirs, COUNTRY OF MY SKULL, the film features strong performances from both leads and by Brendan Gleeson in a supporting role as Colonel De Jager. IN MY COUNTRY asks an intriguing question about who should take the blame for what happened--the leaders, the soldiers, or the people who watched it happen and never protested.

The erotic Mexican drama MUJERES INFIELES 2 follows the original film in its exploration of marital infidelity through three short tales. In the first story, a pair of married actors must cope with the wife's revelation that she only wed her husband in order to further her career. The next short film is a tale similar to that of the popular Spanish film TALK TO HER. A doctor, obsessed with one of his patients, has a unique opportunity to be with her after an accident puts her into a coma. In the final film, a transvestite who has hidden his identity from his wife struggles with the problems his secret creates in his marriage. Controversial rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE, a bracing drama directed by the increasingly audacious Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man who is desperate to make a better life for himself.
