THIRTEEN: THIRTEEN is Catherine Hardwicke's explosive portrait of teenage girls at their very worst. Mean, manipulative, conniving, and utterly out of control, these skinny, sexy, drug-addicted, 13-year-old time bombs are nothing short of terrifying. Hardwicke's movie is brilliant in its ability to portray this phenomenon, which comes off as very real. The skillful photography from cinematographer Elliot Davis communicates the most complicated themes of the film: insecurity, confusion, wanting to be liked and accepted, and feeling like it's time to grow up fast. In an early scene, protagonist Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a shy girl and good student, approaches Evie (Nikki Reed), the school's ultra-popular bad girl, and the two size up each other's clothing, jewelry, hair, shoes, socks, and decide to go on a shopping spree. From there Tracy spirals downward, copying Evie's every move in an aggressive game of daring each other to take increasingly dangerous risks--stealing, getting piercings, experimenting with sex, drinking and taking drugs, and much more. All the while Tracy's mom (Holly Hunter) who is a bohemian recovering alcoholic trying to be open-minded and supportive about her daughter's rebellion, slowly loses her authority and her ability to cope with these volatile teens. A booming, excellent soundtrack punctuates the hyper, desperate, manic mood of the girls' behavior, and catalyzes the adrenaline rush that is THIRTEEN.THE GOOD GIRL: THE GOOD GIRL, directed by Miguel Arteta and written by Mike White, stars Jennifer Aniston as Justine, a sullen 30-year-old woman stuck in a dead-end job at the Retail Rodeo department store. Gene Hackman is perfect as Harry Moseby, a second-rate gumshoe working on low-end cases while trying to straighten out his own muddled life. When he is contacted by a mother looking for her young movie-actress daughter, Harry supposes it is just another dull case. He finds the girl and brings her home with little trouble. But soon Harry learns of the girl's death shortly after her return. He discovers the death of one of her boyfriends as well and, connecting the two accidents, tries to unravel an ever-growing mystery. Director Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison tale (the first being 1994's nearly flawless THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) is a hopeful charmer with a hint of the supernatural. The story focuses on Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), a Louisiana security guard who works on death row during the Great Depression. When John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a gigantic black man convicted of raping and murdering two white girls, joins the other prisoners on the row, Paul's life is forever altered. Coffey doesn't fit the mold of a psychopathic killer; he's kind, gentle, and afraid of the dark. As the story progresses, Edgecomb learns that there is something more than simple goodness to Coffey. Building to a hopeful climax, Darabont once again proves that he is King's most loyal cinematic translator. The third installment in the Boys Life series, following 1995's BOYS LIFE and 1997's BOYS LIFE 2, BOYS LIFE 3 consists of five short films, each telling a story related to gay life, identity, and sexuality. In French director David Fournier's MAJORETTES (a.k.a. DES MAJORETTES DANS L'ESPACE), an existential narrator talks over comic clips of film and illustrative cardboard cutouts. He tells a simple story of Dimitri, a soviet cosmonaut who likes majorettes, Catherine and Laurent who like making love, the Pope who likes airports, and Vincent who likes boys. HITCH by director Bradley Rust Gray follows two attractive men on a dizzying road trip that involves some sexual self-discovery. The Hollywood farce INSIDE OUT, from director Jason Gould, involves one slapstick joke after the next, hitting on psychotherapy, gay stereotypes, failed marriages, and tabloid sensationalism. JUST ONE TIME, a short film by Lane Janger that he later made into a feature-length film, is included here in its original format.
