This fish-out-of-water film was the beginning of a long association between Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood, who stars as the eponymous deputy sheriff from Arizona. The cowboy-cop is sent to New York City to extradite escaped murderer James Ringerman (Don Stroud), only to be told by police lieutenant McElroy (Lee J. Cobb) that the killer is recovering from an acid trip at Bellevue Hospital and can be released only with his doctors' approval. After some low-key flirtation with probation officer Julie Roth (Susan Clark), Coogan decides to take the bull by the horns and tricks Ringerman's Bellevue attendants into releasing him. However, on the way to the airport, the Arizona-bound cop is waylaid by Ringerman's amusingly wacked-out girlfriend, Linny (Tisha Sterling), and beaten senseless by a goon, allowing his prisoner to escape. Later, while in Julie's apartment, he surreptitiously extracts Linny's file to get her address and tracks her to an Electric Circus-like club whose habitues he regards with utter disdain, and he persuades the ditsy woman to take him back to her apartment. An amusing action film, COOGAN'S BLUFF makes much of the irony of the laconic Old West, with Eastwood being equally put off by both the bureaucratically hamstrung cops and the acid-fueled hippies. Cobb and Clark are good in supporting roles.DVD Features:Region 1Keep Case

The Charcoal People (DVD) The Charcoal People (DVD) » The Charcoal People (DVD)

Thousands of migrant workers, known as Charcoal People, travel the back roads of Brazil year-round to slash and burn the landscape for charcoal. This charcoal is then used in the production of pig iron, which is mainly used in U.S. automotive and construction industries. As foot-long chain links wrap around trees in a sunburnt savannah and rip them out of the ground, a 76-year-old Afro-Brazilian man tells of his life travelling alone, following the chains, the kilns, and the smoke. He lives for working, and has been in charcoal since he was eleven. He, like the others portrayed here, knows nothing other than charcoal. Another man in the industry, old bricklayer who constructs beautiful, man-sized, igloo-like kilns, laments his illiteracy--an affliction that runs rampant among migrant workers. Most of them were forced to forego education in order to work, although the government now pays parents to send their children to company-run schools. As the tree plantations and savannahs are cleared, the Charcoal People pack up their houses and follow the work. Sadly, the best new source for both high-grade iron ore and wood for processing is in the depths of the Amazon Rainforest. While the forests dwindle, what remains is a startlingly beautiful documentary that shows the way the environment is being destroyed by this unforgiving industry that does not even offer its workers hope that they'll be able to sustain a decent life.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Single Side - Dual Layer

Konga Roja/Rio Escondido (DVD) Konga Roja/Rio Escondido (DVD) » Konga Roja/Rio Escondido (DVD)

Two Mexican classics focusing on the plight of the rural, poverty-stricken peasant are collected here: KONGA ROJA and RIO ESCONDIDO. The supervisor of a banana packing plant (Pedro Armendariz) is a target for union oppositionists in KONGA ROJA. While defending the members of the plant`s union, and keeping their goals alive in the workplace, the supervisor is robbed by a band of bad guys. Little does he know that his so-called best friend is one of the culprits. Amidst the office politics and union protest, his life is further complicated by a romance with a singer (Maria Antonieta Pons) at a port tavern.A monumental achievement of the Mexican cinema, RIO ESCONDIDO is notable in a number of respects. It was directed by Emilio Fernandez, historically one of the most important Latin American filmmakers, at the height of his success and popularity. The star is Maria Filix, an actress with iconic status in Mexico, and the villain is played by Carlos Lspez Moctezuma, who won an Ariel (the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar) for his role in the film. The influence of Sergei Eisenstein on Fernandez is manifest in the film, with a story of poverty-stricken villagers being exploited by a cruel governor. Filix plays a teacher sent by the President to investigate the horrible living conditions and corrupt bureaucracies of the countryside. She arrives in Ciudad Juarez, where a greedy thug (Lspez Moctezuma) has seized control of the town and terrorizes its populace. The teacher educates the townspeople in how to defend themselves and battle the villainous mayor. RIO ESCONDIDO is a story of social justice made by some of the giants of Mexican cinema.
