Ivan Passer's BORN TO WIN is a fascinating, though widely overlooked, time capsule that reflects the down-and-dirty New York City of the early 1970s. In a career filled with memorable performances, George Segal is once again astounding as J, a heroin addict whose life has begun to spiral out of control. No longer interested in being a hairdresser, J spends his days searching for another fix. Along the way, he meets Parm (Karen Black), another weary soul who clings desperately to J. As J gets more and more lost in the haze of his addiction, he must face up to the junky life that has trapped him.BORN TO WIN marks Czech director Passer's first foray into American filmmaking. While his unflinchingly honest approach to the material may have contributed to the picture's lackluster box office return (as opposed to, say, Jerry Shatzberg's THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK), the film nonetheless remains a vital contribution to the canon of 1970s American cinema. This can be largely attributed to Segal and Black, who have never been better. Documentary filmmaker Mickey Lemle (COMPASSION IN EXILE: THE STORY OF THE 14TH DALAI LAMA) opens his fascinating biopic of spiritual leader Ram Dass with two strikingly contrasted images--archival footage from 1969 showing the long-bearded, blissed-out guru intoning on the role of a yogi, and the present-day Dass, older and debilitated, struggling to lift his legs out of a car. These images reflect the film's dual mission: to illuminate Ram Dass' pivotal role as a spiritual guide in 1960s America, and to follow him on a new quest after suffering a stroke. Dass (formerly Richard Alpert) was a Harvard psychology professor, who with Timothy Leary spearheaded the movement to explore LSD's mind-expanding capabilities. Along with interviewing Dass' contemporaries, Lemle uses compelling archival footage of Dass' days at Harvard, the acid-tripping community at Millbrook, and his life-changing experience in India with guru Maharaj Ji. Layered between images from the guru's heyday, Lemle uses touching footage of Dass shot over a two-year period, as he struggles with the physical and emotional fallout from his stroke. Dex (Donal Logue), an overweight slacker living in Santa Fe, excels at charming women. The reason behind his success is apparently the Tao of Steve, a pseudo-philosophy, largely about dating women, developed by Dex and his drinking buddies. While this lazy lifestyle with no commitment seems to work, Dex gradually begins to realize there's something more meaningful missing from his life. When he meets Syd (Greer Goodman), a beautiful set designer, Dex discovers the Tao of Steve isn't a foolproof way of thinking, and must get in touch with his real emotions to get the girl of his dreams.Jenniphr Goodman's directorial debut is a highly enjoyable romantic comedy. Set along the gorgeous desert landscapes of New Mexico, Goodman's film manages to echo its surroundings with its easy-going pace and attitude. In his first leading role, Logue is immediately likeable, portraying Dex as a surprisingly complex man with simple ideals. Abandoned by their parents, street kids Ali, Kwita, and Boukber become each other`s surrogate family while roaming the streets of Casablanca begging for money. When Ali is ruthlessly murdered by a local gang, his friends are determined to give him a farewell suitable for royalty, and come together to plan his extravagant funeral. Director Nabil Ayouch brings this heart-wrenching battle between youthful innocence and harrowing experience to life with a spectacular, yet untrained cast of children. ALI ZAOUA depicts its subjects as children--who despite having been forced to grow up too soon--manage to retain their youthful imaginations. This creativity and naove hopefulness is seen most clearly through several (animated) hallucination sequences. These sequences are in themselves paradoxical, as they are evidence of the children`s spoiling (they are produced as the results of sniff glue), and their still-untarnished imaginations.
