With her directorial debut, a colorful historical drama recounting cinema's arrival in 1902 Peking, Chinese filmmaker and co-writer, Ann Hu, makes history herself with the first co-production between Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese film studios. Liu, (Xia Yu) the young photographer at Master Ren's (Liu Peiqi) well-respected photo shop, is fascinated with new technology. Ren, however, thinks Liu's tinkering is a distraction from duties like photographing the Peking Opera's biggest star, Lord Tan (Li Yusheng). When an Englishman, Raymond Wallace, (Jared Harris) opens Shadow Magic, a small, dusty theatre touting a new technology of pictures that move, Liu is incredibly curious. After beholding the ethereal images in rapt amazement, the spellbound photographer begs Wallace for a job. The two men join forces, pledging to earn fortunes to impress Wallace's drifting wife, and Liu's beloved Ling (Xing Yufei), the pretty, aloof daughter of Lord Tan. Liu's double life soon leads to conflict, however, when his father, Ren, and Lord Tan view the Western gimmick as a threat to old, Eastern tradition. Roland Joffe's adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's seminal novel tells the story of an intolerant Puritan community in the early days of American settlement. In the 1660s, Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) makes the voyage to the New World in order to find religious freedom and a new home for her and her husband, Roger (Robert Duvall). However, Hester proves to be too free-spirited and strong-willed for most of the conservative Massachusetts Bay colony members. She abandons the laws of the colony and sets up a home far from the town square, living by her own rules and setting the townspeople's morals on end. While waiting for her husband's arrival from England, she befriends the town pastor, Arthur Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman), a liberal-minded and passionate man who instantly strikes Hester's fancy. Although the married woman and pious pastor are strongly attracted to one another, the two refuse to give in to temptation--until Roger is reported dead in a violent Indian massacre. Secrets hang heavy in the air of a small American town in this tragic tale of murder, sex, and desperation. Ellen Biddle (Melora Walters, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT) murders her husband in a fit of rage when she discovers his unfaithfulness, then takes up with the teenage son of her husband`s mistress (Kris Park). Against a backdrop of oppressive drought, these lost souls launch a doomed bid for redemption, losing themselves completely along the way.
