Dark secrets form past lives are revealed through strange and dangerous circumstances in this Mexican thriller. LUZ Y SOMBRA tells the tale of Ana Lilia, a wife who becomes disgusted with the drunken behavior of her husband, Ernesto at an important gathering. After arguing with him and hurrying out of the venue towards her home, Ana happens upon the irrational and seemingly crazy Ernesto who kidnaps her and holds her hostage. While in captivity, Ana slowly realizes that Ernesto is someone from her dark past and she begins to learn more about her husband's past life as well. hm Garcia's THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER is a wonderfully intelligent and deeply poignant series of interconnected vignettes that focus on the lives of strong, independent single women. In This Is Dr. Keener, Glenn Close stars as a divorced doctor taking care of her elderly mother. A visit by a tarot card reader forces Keener to come to grips with her loneliness. In the marvelously perceptive Fantasies About Rebecca, Holly Hunter is a bank manager on the verge of turning 40 who meets a disturbed homeless woman determined to share some harsh insights into Rebecca's life. Kathy Baker stars as Rose, a divorced mother raising a teenage son in Someone for Rose; when a little person moves into the house across the street, long-subdued sexual yearnings awaken in Rose. In Good Night, Lilly, Good Night, Christine, Calista Flockhart is Christine, who is taking care of her dying girlfriend, reminiscing about their pasts, and worrying about the future. Finally, in Love Waits for Kathy, Amy Brenneman plays a lonely single detective living with her blind sister, who begins reevaluating her life after finding a former classmate of hers dead from an apparent suicide. Dani Tanovic's debut film about the futility of the Bosnian War stars Branko Duric as Ciki, a Bosnian soldier with really bad luck. When he and a few other relief soldiers try to join their Bosnian comrades on the front, they get lost in fog, fall asleep, and are awakened at dawn by Serbian gunfire. His comrades are all blown away, but Ciki saves himself by diving into an abandoned trench in no man's land. Nino (Rene Bitorajac), a Serbian soldier, sneaks into the trench and finds Ciki. Though both men are armed and dangerous, they are nonetheless unable to escape the trench without getting shot at by either side. The UN is called in to fix the situation but it only make matters worse. When an English journalist, Jane Livingston (Katrin Cartlidge), gets wind of the story, a media frenzy breaks out across the front.Tanovic knows his subject matter well as he worked as a war documentarian during the Bosnian conflict. The title of the film, NO MAN'S LAND, is especially fitting given the setting--rolling hills covered with flowers, birds, and insects.
