Literally translated as banquet for demonic beasts, KICHIKU was shot on a shoestring budget as a student thesis film, but it introduced a raw, visceral style that was virtually unseen before. Set in 1970s Japan and often interpreted as a critical depiction of the student political scene of that time, it depicts a radical leftist group whose charismatic leader, Aizawa, has been put in prison. His girlfriend Masami takes over, but is considerably less effective in maintaining the group's cohesion, and when Aizawa commits hara-kiri in jail, the group falls apart in a frenzy of paranoia and internal purging that incorporates an orgiastic excess of brutal torture and bloodshed. Action master Besson takes on French history in this ambitious look at the legendary saint and martyr. Beginning with a young Joan witnessing her sister's rape and murder at the hands of brutal English soldiers, the film picks up years later when Joan (Jovovich) appears at the court of the French Dauphin (Malkovich), who is making little progress against his enemies. Joan's self-confidence and charisma induce the Dauphin to take a gamble by allowing her to lead troops, resulting in an upset victory at Orleans. However, Joan eventually outlives her usefulness to the French throne and is sold out to the English, who burn her for heresy. All the while, Joan struggles with her faith, exasperating the experienced French generals and having impassioned arguments with her imaginary Conscience (Hoffman). Fueled by James Woods's chilling portrayal of Klansman Byron De La Beckwith, the cold-blooded, unrepentant killer of Medgar Evers, GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI offers a compelling account based on the true story of the attempt to see justice served in spite of time, corruption, and a defiant community. During the 1960s, Myrlie Evers (stirringly portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg) witnessed her husband slain in her own driveway in front of her three young children. For 30 years, Mrs. Evers petitioned the courts to reopen his case, tried twice to questionable mistrial, with her pleas eternally falling on deaf ears. Bobby DeLaughter (Alec Baldwin), while certainly an ambitious attorney, is not the most likely candidate to take on the largely forgotten case of the shooting murder of Evers, a prominent civil rights worker. The son-in-law of a well-known (and well-known to be racist) judge, DeLaughter's civil rights history is negligible; however, as a father, the case strikes his sense of fairness, justice, and family, and he takes it. From there lies an uphill battle, as many in Mississippi, even at the end of the 20th century, still hold to the traditions of segregation and resentment of those who would change them.
