This remake of the 1978 feature film DEATH ON THE NILE uses a lavish location shoot in Egypt, presenting Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) with the opportunity to solve another intriguing case. Linnet Doyle (Emily Blunt) is a wealthy upper class woman who has recently married. Sadly the wedding was conducted in somewhat shady circumstances, as her husband was the former fiance of Doyle's best friend, who she stole away in a less than honorable fashion. The couple decides to honeymoon in Egypt, but a fabulous cruise down the River Nile turns nasty when Doyle is found murdered in her bed. Naturally all eyes focus on the former lover of Doyle's husband, but when other corpses start to show up, it's fortunate that Poirot is on hand to sort through the suspects, and find the real killer. Author Agatha Christie's work is once again brought to the big screen with spectacular panache. Director Andy Wilson makes full use of the lush surroundings in Egypt, and the cast delivers convincing performances throughout. This fish-out-of-water film was the beginning of a long association between Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood, who stars as the eponymous deputy sheriff from Arizona. The cowboy-cop is sent to New York City to extradite escaped murderer James Ringerman (Don Stroud), only to be told by police lieutenant McElroy (Lee J. Cobb) that the killer is recovering from an acid trip at Bellevue Hospital and can be released only with his doctors' approval. After some low-key flirtation with probation officer Julie Roth (Susan Clark), Coogan decides to take the bull by the horns and tricks Ringerman's Bellevue attendants into releasing him. However, on the way to the airport, the Arizona-bound cop is waylaid by Ringerman's amusingly wacked-out girlfriend, Linny (Tisha Sterling), and beaten senseless by a goon, allowing his prisoner to escape. Later, while in Julie's apartment, he surreptitiously extracts Linny's file to get her address and tracks her to an Electric Circus-like club whose habitues he regards with utter disdain, and he persuades the ditsy woman to take him back to her apartment. An amusing action film, COOGAN'S BLUFF makes much of the irony of the laconic Old West, with Eastwood being equally put off by both the bureaucratically hamstrung cops and the acid-fueled hippies. In this tender tale of love and loss, Guy Pearce and Helena Bonham Carter play two strangers mysteriously brought together by destiny. Sam (Pearce) is a psychology professor who has traveled back to his hometown for his father's funeral. There he meets Ruby (Carter) who jogs his memory and brings his childhood racing back. The young, innocent, optimistic boy he once was races into focus as he recalls bygone days spent with his best friend, Silvy. With lovely photography of the small town in the Australian bush where Sam was raised, tender moments are played out in quiet splendor by Lindley Joyner and Brooke Harmon as the young Sam and Silvy. Meanwhile, in present time, Sam wants badly to believe that Ruby may just be his long lost childhood love and he invents a story in his head that she may have undergone amnesia and and simply forgotten that she is in fact his Silvy. The magical moments that he recalls, following Silvy through darkened country roads in summertime and delighting in pre-teen puppy love, are mimicked by the bohemian Ruby, who seems to sometimes skip through life and other times run from it.
