DAS BOOT: In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and attack Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of naval warfare. Meanwhile, the crew`s captain (J rgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon enlivened beyond the crew`s expectations when their boat`s surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Based on a short story by cyberpunk writer William Gibson (NEUROMANCER), this sleek film stars Willem Dafoe and Christopher Walken as freelance espionage agents looking for a way to make some money in a future ruled by warring corporations. They hit on a scheme to hire gorgeous Italian prostitute Sandii (Asia Argento) to seduce a brilliant chemical engineer (Yoshitaka Amano) into leaving his family and employers for a rival company. All goes well at first, but then it seems that X (Dafoe) and Sandii have fallen in love during her training, which may have somehow caused the whole deal to go haywire. Under the uncompromising eye of director Abel Ferrara, this weird new world seems beautiful, dangerous, and very sexy. Those looking for a conventional narrative may be stumped as portable video units and handheld camera-phones advance most of the plot, but for adventurous viewers willing to actively engage it, this unique mix of breathy eroticism and technological paranoia is highly seductive. Rap artist Schoolly D composed the moody electronic score. The black widow spider mates to kill--and so does the femme fatale of this noir thriller. Catharine (Theresa Russell) makes quite a glamorous living by marrying well and then carefully murdering her devoted husbands after ensuring that her name's on the will. No one suspects that the beautiful and affluent widow is actually a killer, as she hides her tracks well, using undetectable poisons. But her luck turns when federal agent Alexandra Barnes (Debra Winger) takes a closer look into the case and suspects she's found a serial killer. Soon Barnes books a flight to Hawaii, where Catharine's doing her mourning in the sun, and discovers that the widow has already gotten her claws into a highly successful hotel tycoon. However, Barnes quickly becomes obsessed with both her alluring subject and with the sophisticated businessman--a situation Catharine is sure to exploit.
