Kramer Vs. Kramer (DVD) Kramer Vs. Kramer (DVD) » Kramer Vs. Kramer (DVD)

Robert Benton's moving and well-observed adaptation of Avery Corman's novel about the aftermath of divorce stars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep as the separating couple, Ted and Joanna Kramer. When dutiful wife and mother Joanna decides to leave Ted, an advertising executive, she also leaves him with the responsibility of caring for their young son, Billy (Justin Henry). The situation proves to be especially difficult since the workaholic father has never really taken care of the boy and, in truth, barely knows him. Things are rough at first, but as the two become accustomed to life without Joanna and Ted's caretaking skills improve, father and son finally develop a relationship. As Ted devotes more time to his son and less to his work, however, the latter suffers, and Ted's subsequent firing coincides with the return of Joanna, who wants her son back.Despite the titular framing of a custody trial, KRAMER VS. KRAMER steps lightly around the complex issue, essentially concerning itself with the father's discovery of the joys and travails of being a parent. Hoffman and Streep turn in exceptional Academy Award-winning performances, and Benton crafts a memorable exploration of parenthood by wisely focusing on the tiny dramas of everyday life--such as the classic, heartbreaking scene in which Ted, on his first morning as a single father, tries (and miserably fails) to make french toast for his son--to capture the essence of a precious relationship.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital Mono - English Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailer - 1. She Hate Me (DVD) She Hate Me (DVD) » She Hate Me (DVD)

Well-known for his ability to combine political and social issues with a poignant story, Spike Lee writes, directs, and produces SHE HATE ME. John Henry Jack Armstrong (Anthony Mackie), an executive at a pharmaceutical company, blows the whistle on the company's CEO over an ethics issue, and is fired. Though he's out of work and has suffered a serious blow to his business reputation, his ex-girlfriend Fatima (Kerry Washington) enlists his help on a babymaking mission. She wants to get pregnant and so does her lesbian girlfriend Alex (Dania Ramirez). In fact, so do plenty of other lesbians, who Fatima invites into Jack's bedroom in droves, resulting in some very funny sex scenes. With a $10,000 price tag per dose of Jack's man milk--cheaper than adoption and less mysterious than artificial insemination--Jack is making a bundle and keeping the lesbian mothers-to-be happy. However, his actions do catch up to him, and in a final court hearing about his corporate situation, his second job also becomes a major detractor from his credibility. Lee uses a smooth jazz score, scenic New York and Brooklyn photography, and a many of his favorite actors--John Turturro, Ossie Davis, Q-Tip--to make this thought-provoking and often surprising film work like a charm.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Subtitles - French, Portuguese, Spanish - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. A Love Divided (DVD) A Love Divided (DVD) » A Love Divided (DVD)

The personal and the political collide in Sidney Macartneys's A LOVE DIVIDED, a compelling cinematic rendering of a notorious sectarian conflict in small town Ireland of the 1950s. Transcending the decade's long, carefully tended barriers between Catholic and protestant, young lovers Sheila Kelly (Orla Brady) and Sean Cloney (Liam Cunningham) marry. Their hometown of Fethard-on-Sea is exquisitely rendered by Macartney, giving a moving portrait of the earthy reality of a small town and its residents bound by history, family, and religion. During their Catholic wedding (the couple marries thrice: Catholic, protestant, and civil) the protestant Sheila is made to sign an agreement promising to educate their children in Catholic schools. The idyll of their family farm and passionate devotion to each other is shattered, however, when Sheila suddenly decides to reject the edicts of the demanding Catholic parson, enrolling her daughter in the local protestant school. When Sheila eventually absconds with the children, Sean's strong reaction is pushed to extremes of hysteria and animosity by the town's Catholic community, which orders a protestant boycott. Becoming pawns of age-old animosities, the couple's dispute becomes a political crisis and a devastating allegory for the convoluted religious conflicts of Ireland.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenSingle Side - Dual LayerAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
