In this crime drama directed by Laurence Fishburne and adapted from his own play, RIFF RAFF, a chance meeting changes the lives of two half brothers. One of the pair, 20-20 Mike (Fishburne), is a black man, a streetwise career criminal who claims to have eyes in the back of his head. His half brother, Billy (Titus Welliver), is a white strung-out purse snatcher who is desperate for a fix. Their plan to rob a local drug dealer ends in chaos and bloodshed, and they call on Mike's old friend, Tony the Tiger (Eamonn Walker), to help them get out of town. What they don't know is that Tony is now working for the same dealer they tried to rob, and as the three ponder their allegiance to each other, the tension mounts. ONCE IN THE LIFE is Fishburne's directorial debut, and his skill in guiding the already strong cast (which includes Annabella Sciorra and Gregory Hines) comes naturally. Despite the seedy, run-down locations and the overall grimness of the subject matter, Fishburne injects a lot of unexpected humor into the script. MI VIDA LOCA is a compelling look at a microcosm of East L.A.'s Echo Park. Writer and director Allison Anders (GAS FOOD LODGING) lived in the neighborhood for many years with her daughter, inspiring her to make this film about life in a Latina girl gang. The film is sympathetic to these young women, presenting their stories honestly and with a visual flair that the subjects themselves would probably appreciate. The stories are told as a series of vignettes with different narrators, each with his or her perspective on the events portrayed. This approach allows the characters the opportunity to explain their actions, giving the audience a better understanding of behavior they might otherwise easily condemn. The key players are Mousie (Seidy Lopez) and Sad Girl (Angel Aviles), best friends who let local drug dealer Ernesto (Jacob Vargas) come between them. From Walt Disney Pictures comes MIRACLE, an inspiring family drama that combines hockey and history in retelling the story of one of sports' all-time greatest upsets. In 1980, amidst the tense political climate of the Cold War, Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) took over as coach of the U.S. Olympic hockey team. With the help of affable assistant coach Craig Patrick (Noah Emmerich), Brooks selected a group of twenty amateur hockey players who faced the daunting task of bringing respectability to their country's floundering program. While Brooks was well aware that his team lacked the talent and experience of the team from Russia, he nonetheless devoted his energy to realizing his lifelong dream: to coach a team to Olympic gold.Stepping into the gaudy wardrobe of the legendary Brooks (who was a consultant on the film and died in an automobile accident just after production wrapped), Russell delivers one of his finest performances to date. Surrounded by a cast of unknown young actors, Russell captures the complexities of a man who dared to dream the impossible dream. Director Gavin O'Connor and screenwriter Eric Guggenheim deftly balance the drama of the game itself with the larger political implications the game inspired, celebrating this truly miraculous moment in time.
