When hotshot insurance agent John Nolan walks into a deli/liquor store and sends back a bottle of wine because the label was scratched, he never realized such a small act could lead to tragedy. While ex-con Auggie Rose goes into the back for a new bottle, an armed robber walks in and eventually shoots Auggie. John feels responsible, so he takes Auggie in his arms and accompanies him to the hospital. But when Auggie eventually dies, John becomes determined to find out as much as he can about who Auggie was and whether there is anyone who will claim the body. Slowly, Auggie's life starts taking over his own--to the point that when Auggie's prison pen pal comes to town, John actually says that he is Auggie Rose. Matthew Tabak's debut thriller is a spooky look at obsession and second chances. Jeff Goldblum excels as John Nolan, with good turns by Nancy Travis as his longtime live-in girlfriend, Ann Heche as Auggie's pen pal, Richard T. In this adaptation of the classic Mary Mapes Dodge children's novel, set in 1860's Holland, young Hans Brinker (Rony Zeaner) finds himself responsible for supporting his family after his father (Erik Strandmark) becomes injured in an accident. He travels to Amsterdam in search of money to help pay for his father's operation, and winds up in the city's yearly ice skating race, where he must face off with his arch-rival Ludwig Schimmel (Lennart Klefbom). Starring the Hilton sisters, who are joined at the hip, this story is based on a Mark Twain story called Those Amazing Twins in which one of the twins is convicted of a crime and both must face conviction though one is innocent. O LUCKY MAN!) directs two legendary American actors in this charming, simple story of two elderly women looking back on their lives, and still planning for the future, as they wait to see the migrating whales pass their summer house on the coast of Maine. Lillian Gish, the star of
WAY DOWN EAST in 1920, plays Sarah Webber, a slightly frail but still active woman who now cares for her blind sister, Libby, played by Bette Davis. Famous for her acerbic tongue, Davis does not disappoint as the domineering older sister.The film opens with a black and white montage of Libby (Margaret Ladd) and Sarah (Mary Steenburgen) running to see the whales when they were young girls. Later Anderson uses photographs of the sisters in their youth using actual photos of Davis and Gish themselves. These have a striking familiarity, Davis's black hair and those penetrating eyes and Gish's beautiful smile, give instant recognition to how time has passed for these two women.THE WHALES OF AUGUST is like a Checkov play, complete with an exiled Russian nobleman, about faded memories and family loyalties. Vincent Price brings a quiet dignity to the role of Mr. Maranov, who asks if the sisters will take him into their home as a boarder. Ann Southern as Tisha Doughty, a neighbor who has know the sisters all their lives, tries to mediate between the always-quarreling sisters. But this film clearly belongs to its leads. Bette Davis and Lillian Gish play off each other perfectly, turning a rough stone of a story into a

Based loosely on the life of the murdered talk-radio personality Alan Berg, TALK RADIO stars monologist Eric Bogosian as the abrasive, self-loathing talk-radio host Barry Champlain. He spends his nights at Dallas station KGAB engaged in vitriolic conversations with a motley assortment of racists, anti-semites, rednecks, and all-purpose lunatics. Just having learned that his show has a chance to be picked up for national syndication, Barry seems to have ratcheted up the abuse level to new heights, worrying his co-workers. Yet while Barry's career is taking off, studio boss Dan (Alec Baldwin) angers him by trying to alter the provocative content of his show. At the same time, Barry's having problems with his girlfriend and ex-wife, Ellen (Ellen Greene). And a neo-Nazi group is making increasingly menacing calls, forcing him to the edge of a possible nervous breakdown.
