This drama from director Mehdi Norowzian was loosely inspired by the James Joyce classic ULYSSES. Set in the American South, LEO tells the story of Stephen (Joseph Fiennes), a parolee who has struck up a pen-pal friendship with Leo, the son of the depressed and fiery Mary (Elisabeth Shue). As Stephen tries to reacquaint himself with the outside world and stay out of trouble, Mary struggles to come to terms with a tragic car accident that took the life of her wife and daughter. 1927 version of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Abolitionist novel disturbed its audience at the time because of its chilling depiction of the horrors of slavery. However, much of the film's treatment of African-American characters reflects the unfortunate attitudes of its time which may offend some. Spike Lee's drama is a complex, multilayered, and volatile look at interracial romance in present-day New York City. Flipper Purify (Wesley Snipes), an up-and-coming African American architect, seems to have it all: a successful career, a nice apartment on a renovated street in Harlem, a beautiful, intelligent wife whom he adores, and a bright, loving daughter. The last thing he expects is to find himself in an affair with a blue-collar Italian American from Bensonhurst. But soon after Angie Tucci (Annabella Sciorra) comes to work in his office, the two end up staying late together and having intimate talks over takeout Chinese food. Inevitably a romance begins, leaving Flipper and Angie caught up in the fury and suspicion of the racial prejudice of their families and friends. As their lives unravel, so does their affair, and they wonder if their relationship ever had a chance from the beginning. As usual with Lee, he isn't content to tackle simply one issue in his films--in JUNGLE FEVER, he addresses, for perhaps the first time, the drug epidemic in the African American community. The school that 15-year-old Silvio (Silvio Muccino, who also penned the script) attends has been taken over by the students, who demand an end to the privatization of the facility; Silvio himself is mostly concerned in putting an end to his virginity, however. He uses the rebellion as a way to steal a few moments alone with Valentina, the prettiest girl in school, and the two share a kiss. When Silvio tells of his coup to his big-mouthed best friend, word gets around to Valentina's very jealous boyfriend Martino, and Silvio finds himself in some deep trouble at school. At home Silvio must contend with his ex-revolutionary parents (Anna Galiena and Luca De Flippo), who have settled comfortably into a bourgeois existence and are painfully dismissive of the next generation's attempts at political activism. Ultimately Silvio finds an unexpected object for his affections when he discovers that he, too, has been loved from afar. This charming, lighthearted coming-of-age comedy has some decidedly prescient things to say about the role of politics for a young generation, while presenting a poignantly apt depiction of teen romance. A writer for the television series TALES FROM THE CRYPT decided to concoct a similar film for children ranging in age from 6 to 11, a group that doesn't have many real horror movies tailored especially for them. In place of the Crypt Keeper, a countrified talking corpse with a bushy moustache dubbed Gator Butt Willie introduces the three tales.
