French screenwriter and actress Agnhs Jaoui`s assured directorial debut is a funny, clever, and moving examination of the intertwining love lives and differing cultural standpoints of an unlikely group of men and women. When Castella (Jean-Pierre Bacri), a successful factory owner bored with his workaday life, unwillingly accompanies his shrill, high-strung wife, Angelique (Christiane Millet) to a performance of Racine`s BIRINICE, he falls hard for the lead actress, Clara (Anne Alvaro). Meanwhile, during the performance, Castella`s chauffeur, Deschamps (Alain Chabat) has a surprise run-in with Manie, (Agnhs Jaoui) a bartender with whom he once had a one-night stand. This touches off a discussion about women and sex with Castella`s hard-edged bodyguard, Moreno (Gerard Lanvin), who warns Deschamps about his romantic naiveti. Castella`s new goal to pursue the intelligent, sophisticated Clara is aided by fate when she becomes his English instructor. Clara, along with her artistic friends, however, is less than enthralled by Castella`s tactlessness and lack of culture. At the same time, the soulful Deschamps, cynical Moreno, and cool, carefree Manie enter into an unexpected relationship. Jaoui`s accomplished, funny tale features excellent performances, and is a wise look at the complexities of love and the errors people make in falsely judging each other.

Fed up with her boyfriend (Michael Madsen), live-wire Arkansas waitress Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon) persuades her friend Thelma Dickinson (Geena Davis), a naive housewife burdened with a negligent, sexist husband (Christopher McDonald), to hit the road with her for a weekend of freedom. One of their first stops is a bar where the women relax, dance, and flirt with some of the locals. But the situation turns ugly when one man (Timothy Carhart) follows Thelma to the parking lot and attempts to rape her, causing Louise to shoot and accidentally kill him. Convinced that the police will never believe their version of the incident, the women take off, now fugitives from the law. Emboldened by recent events, Thelma picks up studly young cowboy J.D. (Brad Pitt) in Oklahoma and enjoys a one-night stand that leads to even more trouble. Director Ridley Scott's infamous feminist road movie ranks among the best films of the 1990s. Considered one of the most popular musicals of all time, WEST SIDE STORY earned director Robert Wise an Oscar for Best Director as well as nine other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Realistically portrayed characters and their surroundings and expert editing complementing innovative dance sequences mark this highly stylized modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale. The stage is set in New York's Upper West Side in the 1950s, where the area's slums are plagued by racial tensions acted on by two rival gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Caucasian Jets. In the middle of this mess is young, innocent Maria (Natalie Wood), a Puerto Rican seamstress whose brother, Bernardo (George Chakiris), is the leader of the Sharks. Despite the warnings of Anita (Rita Moreno), Bernardo's fiery girlfriend, Maria falls in love with a young, hopeful Polish boy, Tony (Richard Beymer), who used to belong to the Jets, now headed by Riff (Russ Tamblyn). When Tony, on Maria's urging, tries to stop a rumble between the gangs, tragedy ensues, marking their dedicated love affair with violence and desperation.
