This autobiographical coming of age tale from writer-director Eva Gardos begins in 1950s Hungary as Communist oppression forces a pair of aristocratic parents (Nastassja Kinski and Tony Goldwyn) to sneak across the border to freedom and find a new life in America. Circumstances result in their infant daughter, Zsuza, being left behind to spend her formative years in the care of loving Hungarian peasants. When, at age six, she finally comes to the U.S., the cross-curtain culture shock makes for an extra-stormy adolescence, especially when her guilt-ridden mother becomes over-protective to the point of keeping Zsuza locked in her room.The film makes striking contrast between the old-world beauty of Hungary and the prefabricated gaudiness of post-war America, and Gardos manages to be refreshingly non-judgmental in portraying the pros and cons of each. Performances are uniformly strong, especially from the always-intense Kinski, and newcomer Kelly Endresz-Balanki as the 6-year-old Zsuzsa (she is later played by Scarlett Johansen, who is also very good). Directed by Roman Coppola (the son of Francis Ford Coppola and brother of Sofia) in his feature film debut, CQ follows Paul (Jeremy Davies), an aspiring American filmmaker living in Paris circa 1969 with his French girlfriend, Marlene (Elodie Boulez). When Paul's not in his flat making an angst-ridden home movie and treating Marlene with complete indifference, he's working as a editor on a sci-fi film helmed by the volatile Andrezej (Gerard Depardieu) and starring the beautiful Valentine (Angela Lindvall) as Dragonfly, a sexy secret agent. After a tense fight between Andrezej and the film's producer (Giancarlo Giannini), Paul is promoted to director, leaving him with an unfinished film and a growing infatuation with Valentine.A tribute to late-1960s guilty pleasures such as BARBARELLA and DANGER: DIABOLIK, CQ even goes so far as to include John Phillip Law (who starred in both films) in a minor role. Coppola's film also places one foot in the film-about-film genre, with many references to French New Wave cinema that particularly pop up in Paul's autobiographical movie.
