A famous pearl with the reputation of bringing misfortune to its owners since the time of the Borgias is finally brought to rest at the British Museum in London. But due to a mistake on the parts of the normally implacable Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his bumbling assistant Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce), the pearl is ingeniously stolen by master thief Giles Conover (Miles Mander). During the 1970s and early'80s, the EMMANUELLE series dominated the sexploitation scene, with most of the films having little or nothing to do with the original softcore sex classic. The beautiful Laura Gemser starred in many of these knock-offs, one of which is the wild and headline-inspired DIVINE EMMANUELLE. Gemser plays The Divine One, the leader of a cult whose members are commanded to engage in constant orgies with varying sexual partners. With her strongman follower Dorian by her side, she enforces the cult's bizarre rules and plots to gain a fortune by enticing the rich and famous into the group. Alex Cox's riveting biopic tells the bleak, heroin-drenched story of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his disturbed American girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. Gary Oldman delivers a bravura performance as Sid, matched by Chloe Webb's grating, clearly unhinged Nancy. The two lovers' childlike tenderness with each other contrasts sharply with their bleak, violent nihilism, and while the script implies that Nancy's death was accidental, the line between intention and accident is deliberately blurred. Truly independent cinema from the earliest days of the medium as a commercial outlet. This aptly describes the films that were produced in New Rochelle, New York's Thanhouser Studios, the only competition to the Edison and Biograph studios who dominated the marketplace in the 1910s. This collection of short silent dramas
were produced by Edwin Thanhouser for the studios from 1911-1915. Seven films are included, among them, THE EVIDENCE OF THE FILM. This 1913 crime drama follows the complete production process of film and was added in 2001 to the National Film Registry.
