Ray Lawrence's LANTANA is an intelligent, well-written, well-acted film that is much more than just another cop thriller--it's more like YOU CAN COUNT ON ME with its realistic, complex relationships and believable characters. The film opens with a slow pan over a dead body, eerily reminiscent of BLUE VELVET. Anthony LaPaglia stars as Leon, a Sydney police detective who is cheating on his wife, Sonja (Kerry Armstrong), with a married woman from their dance class (Rachael Blake), even though he still loves his wife. There's something missing from his life, but he's not sure what. His relationship with his son is strained, and even his partner, Claudia (Leah Purcell), knows something is wrong. But as his affair heats up and a murder mystery that seems to involve all of the people in his life begins to consume his attentions, he is forced to reexamine his future both as a family man and a cop.LANTANA won seven Australian Film Institute Awards, including best picture, best director for Lawrence, best actor for LaPaglia, best actress for Armstrong, best supporting awards for both Blake and Colosimo, and best adapted screenplay by Andrew Bovell, who based the script on his play SPEAKING IN TONGUES. As the murder investigation gets more complicated and the tangled web leads to even more lying, cheating, and deception, the acting intensifies, and the sharp dialogue allows the characters to blossom as beautifully as the lantana bush referred to in the title.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary Trailer Behind-the-Scenes Footage Deleted ScenesInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene Selection

Jackie Brown (DVD) Jackie Brown (DVD) » Jackie Brown (DVD)

Quentin Tarantino returns to the crime genre once again with this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's RUM PUNCH. Transplanting Leonard's crime story from Miami to Tarantino's city of choice, Los Angeles, JACKIE BROWN cruises along smoothly, much like the film's 1970s soul soundtrack. The film follows Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), a flight attendant who makes extra cash by running drugs and cash for sleazebag Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). When Jackie sees the opportunity to make off with a large chunk of change, she begins to play everyone around her, including two detectives who are threatening her with jail time if she doesn't rat out Ordell, and a sympathetic bail bondsman (Robert Forster) who finds himself falling for Jackie.Tarantino sets a pace that is laid back and groovy, building to an eventual climax that determines whether or not Jackie walks away with the booty. In much the same way that Tarantino resuscitated John Travolta's career with PULP FICTION, he does the same thing here with Grier and Forster. Overall, JACKIE BROWN is a less in-your-face effort than Tarantino's previous films, but it's this downshift in gears that makes it so refreshing.DVD Features:Region 12-Disc SetAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85:1Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English DTS Surround 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Alternate Scenes Deleted Scenes Bonus Feature - 1. The Mahabharata (DVD) The Mahabharata (DVD) » The Mahabharata (DVD)

THE MAHABHARATA, a 2,000-year-old sacred work of the Hindu tradition, is the source for director Peter Brook's most unusual film. After spending much of the 1980s laboring on a nine-hour version of the 18-volume Sanskrit text, which in English means The Political Story of the Human Race, he reduced the work to six hours for television and three for film. Adapted by Jean-Claude Carriere, the film stars Vittorio Mezzogiorno as Arjuna, the leader of the virtuous Pandava clan, which wages war throughout the epic with the power-hungry Kauravas, who are led by Arjuna's half-brothers, Karna (Jeff Kissoon) and Duryodhana (Georges Corraface).
Although the benign Lord Krishna (Bruce Myers) cannot intervene, he provides advice for both clans on protecting dharma, the order of the universe. As with the mythology of any culture--or any Wagnerian opera, for that matter--there are sections that can be grasped only by initiates. But the dramatic impact of most of this compendium of stories and ethical teaching, enacted by an international cast with only minimal sets and props, can be appreciated by anyone. Indeed, for viewers ready to accept Brook's conventions, which are not unlike those of the silent film, this can be a valuable entry point to a fascinating cultural tale.DVD Features:Region 1Keep Case2-Disc SetFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Production Interview - 1. Bend It Like Beckham (DVD) Bend It Like Beckham (DVD) » Bend It Like Beckham (DVD)

Like most everyone else in England, Jess Bahmra (Parminder Nagra) idolizes professional British football player David Beckham. But Jess is different from most fans; she's a talented player in her own right. Unfortunately, her traditional Indian parents (Anupam Kher and Shaheen Khan) have other plans for their youngest daughter. They expect Jess to follow in the footsteps of her sister, Pinky (Archie Panjabi), who is preparing to marry in a traditional Indian wedding. When Jess meets Jules (Keira Knightley), who plays for a local female football team, she pursues her own dream and begins to play, keeping her participation a secret from her parents and often leading to disastrous results. To complicate matters even more, both Jess and Jules are enamored with their coach, Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Ultimately, Jess has to decide whether to live life on her terms or act in accordance with her parents' wishes. This charming coming-of-age tale is also an intriguing look at Indian culture in England. Juliet Stevenson is superb as Jules' tarty, ultra-feminine mother. BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM is directed, written, and produced by Gurinder Chadha (BHAJI ON THE BEACH, WHAT'S COOKING?), and marks the first English feature film appearance from Bollywood icon Anupam Kher.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Surround - Spanish Dolby Surround - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
