Director Kristian Levring, in this Dogme 95-inspired, 1920s period melodrama, provides a chilling look at the power of greed and sex. Seeking to make a quick fortune and to carry on an unconventional relationship, Sarah Morris (Janet McTeer, who cowrote the script) and her younger lover Hamish (J.J. Field) travel to the jungle to survey land for an English trading company. Instead of an exotic hideaway, the pair discovers a remote camp where the residents, after decades in the jungle, have become preoccupied with seizing control of the company fortune. Shrewish Mrs. Jones (Brenda Fricker) maintains tight control--doting on her sycophant nephew Norton (Philip Jackson), and constantly belittling the others, including her socially stunted son William (Tony Maudsley). Sarah and Hamish quickly find themselves in a Joseph Conrad-esque hell, and when Hamish falls ill and the company's money runs out, Sarah finds herself faced with a life-altering moral decision.Using minimal lighting, spare sets and costume design, and slow pacing, director Levring creates a claustrophobic atmosphere appropriate to the descent into madness and desperation faced by the characters. Superbly acted by the entire cast, Olympia Dukakis stands out as Erina, who, having grown up with the boorish William, has accepted her unrequited love for him and has settled for acting as his occasional sexual servant. When the dead body of a woman is found in the woods near the river, feisty homicide detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) and her new partner, Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin) are assigned to the case. That's the premise for MURDER BY NUMBERS, a psychological thriller directed by Barbet Schroeder (REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, SINGLE WHITE FEMALE). Determined to solve the crime, Mayweather follows her hunches and microscopic bits of evidence, focusing her investigation on two teens: Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt), a brilliant, misunderstood nerd, and Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling), a smooth talking, spoiled rich kid. From the beginning, the audience knows that this unlikely duo has formed a secret bond that pushes the boundaries of morality and the law in their attempt to commit the perfect murder and experience complete freedom. It's up to Mayweather, who buries herself in her work in an attempt to forget her own tormented past, and Kennedy, a transfer from Vice who is working his first homicide case, to ignore the stereotypical profiles and see past the obvious in order to solve the crime. A dying man's final words send two people to Gregory Arkadin (Orson Welles), a mysterious and much-feared billionaire who lives on a Xanadu-like castle. In Welles's noirish MR. ARKADIN, Robert Arden stars as Guy Van Stratten, an adventurer and fortune hunter who is interested in Arkadin's money--and his daughter, Raina (Paolo Mori). Arkadin, overprotective of his daughter, has his secretaries prepare a damaging dossier on Van Stratten--entitled Confidential Report. Van Stratten's search for the truth about Arkadin's past--which takes him throughout Europe and to Mexico and features encounters with a variety of fabulously colorful characters--is highly reminiscent of Thompson's search for Rosebud in CITIZEN KANE.Shot in black and white, filled with elegant, cosmopolitan party scenes, and extraordinary close-ups, MR. ARKADIN is a visually stunning film. The camera angles and movement, the exotic sets, the playful music, and the quick cuts--as well as the extremely entertaining and metaphorical stories that Arkadin tells--all help make MR.
