While a secret society of Catholic priests hide him in various French abbeys, a network of bitter Jewish assassins track him, and a determined judge attempts to use the law to pin a prison sentence on him. Caine's portrayal of Brossard as a nervous, jittery old man with a guilty conscience is palpably upsetting. Meanwhile Tilda Swinton as the judge, and Jeremy Northam as her assistant, make an excellent and convincing detective team. BLOOD WORK, starring Clint Eastwood as retired FBI agent Terry McCaleb, is a mystery thriller about a serial killer whose latest victim was the organ donor responsible for McCaleb's recent heart transplant. When the victim's sister, Graciella (Wanda de Jesus), delivers this strange news to him and asks for his help, he has no choice but to answer her call, against his doctor's wishes. While frisky LAPD officers try to keep McCaleb away because his top-notch profiling skills make their efforts seem feeble, and McCaleb's physical strength and stamina are limited more than ever before, it seems as if the case is destined to go unsolved. But McCaleb's conscience weighs too heavily upon him to let the murderer go free, and the only way to clear his mind and find peace is to throw his full energy into the investigation. McCaleb lives on a boat and is well-acquainted with a lazy, drunken young man, Buddy (Jeff Daniels), who lives on a boat in the same berth, so he enlists Buddy as his driver and assistant. Tim Allen reteams with director John Pasquin (THE SANTA CLAUSE) in JOE SOMEBODY. Allen stars as Joe Scheffer, a mild-mannered man who makes promotional videos for a Minneapolis pharmaceutical company. Joe is divorced and quietly unhappy until the office bully, Mark McKinney (Patrick Warburton), punches him out in the company parking lot, in front of Joe's precocious young daughter (Hayden Panettiere of REMEMBER THE TITANS). The humiliated Joe sinks into such a deep depression that not even the flirtations of the company's pretty wellness coordinator (Julie Bowen) can rouse him. Joe decides that he has to restore his pride by challenging McKinney to a fight, and suddenly finds himself the most popular man in the office. Joe even hires a washed-up action movie star (Jim Belushi in a hilariously grizzled performance) to teach him martial arts. He soon finds that he has to weigh the allure of his newfound popularity against the love and respect of those who liked him the way he was. Screenwriter John Scott Shepherd does a good job of balancing slapstick comedy with touching family drama.
