In Fritz Lang's compelling World War II espionage thriller CLOAK AND DAGGER, Gary Cooper stars as Alvah Jasper, a shy and retiring physics professor at a midwestern university. When government agents press Jasper into joining them in an effort to curtail the Nazis' efforts to attain atomic secrets, his life takes a dramatic turn. He is sent to Switzerland to contact Dr. Katerin Loder, a renowned scientist who has information about the status of German atomic technology, but on arriving in Europe finds the scientist missing, and therefore embarks on on a breakneck journey through Switzerland and Italy, fleeing the Nazi SS and attempting to locate Dr. Polda, who is the last person still alive who can give him the vital nuclear information. Along the way, romance is born between Jasper and a beautiful Italian resistance fighter, Gina.Filmed at the close of World War II, CLOAK AND DAGGER was one of Hollywood's first films to deal with the activities of the OSS during the war. The movie tackled some of Fritz Lang's favorite motifs, including underground espionage, anti-Nazi activity, and psychological warfare. Jim Jarmusch has consistently wowed audiences with his truly distinctive cinematic vision. Cate Blanchett delivers a towering dual-role performance in Cousins, playing both her Hollywood superstar self as well as her bitter cousin. In a similarly titled yet totally different short, Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan are brilliant in Cousins? And then there is Delirium, one of the best short films ever made, in which Rappers Rza and Gza (Wu-Tang Clan) discover that Bill Murray is a coffee addict, and they use their expertise to preach to him the benefits of alternative medicine. ARARAT, Atom Egoyan's mysterious drama about the horrors of the largely unknown Armenian genocide in Turkey, unrolls through a film within the film (also titled ARARAT). Jumping back and forth in time, Egoyan weaves together the lives of several people. Ari (Arsinee Khanjian), an art historian, is an advisor on the film. Her son Raffi (David Alplay) is part of the film crew. When Raffi travels to Armenia to gather some additional footage, he is detained by a customs agent (Christopher Plummer) and remains in custody for most of the film. Meanwhile, Raffi's stepsister and girlfriend Celia (Marie-Josee Croze) is haunted by her father's suicide. These and other stories within ARARAT are ostensibly linked through the film within a film. Yet, it is each character's quest for truth which binds them thematically and drives the plot. The film is populated with thematic twins, as each character's individual struggle is mirrored in the plight of the other characters.
