Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (AMORES PERROS) directs this staggeringly intense drama concerning three families whose lives fatefully intertwine through a series of tragic events. With jumbled chronology that jumps from one shocking event to the next in an increasingly chaotic maelstrom, 21 GRAMS is relentlessly gritty in its content and its aesthetics. The title refers to the amount of weight that a human body loses at the moment death arrives, but the story begs the question How much is gained?Paul (Sean Penn) has less than a month to live, stalled on the waiting list for a heart transplant, and his wife (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is determined to get pregnant with his child before it's too late. Meanwhile, Cristina (Naomi Watts) is a happy mother with a loving husband and two daughters but she loses her family in an instant to an unpredictable accident. Finally, Jack (Benicio Del Toro) is an ex-con and born-again Christian struggling to support his wife and two children while battling his own guilty conscience. When these three parties come together, explosively, they make each other behave in impulsive, violent, and destructive ways. 21 GRAMS takes viewers on a jolting journey through sickness, suffering, morality, revenge, and last but not least, the sometimes welcome peace of death. This movie screened in October 2003 as part of the 41st New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Letterboxed Widescreen - 1.85Dual Layer/Single SideAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound - English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound - French DTS 5.1 Surround Sound - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Featurettes - 1.21 GRAMS: In Fragments

In Fritz Lang's compelling World War II espionage thriller CLOAK AND DAGGER, Gary Cooper stars as Alvah Jasper, a shy and retiring physics professor at a midwestern university. When government agents press Jasper into joining them in an effort to curtail the Nazis' efforts to attain atomic secrets, his life takes a dramatic turn. He is sent to Switzerland to contact Dr. Katerin Loder, a renowned scientist who has information about the status of German atomic technology, but on arriving in Europe finds the scientist missing, and therefore embarks on on a breakneck journey through Switzerland and Italy, fleeing the Nazi SS and attempting to locate Dr. Polda, who is the last person still alive who can give him the vital nuclear information. Along the way, romance is born between Jasper and a beautiful Italian resistance fighter, Gina.Filmed at the close of World War II, CLOAK AND DAGGER was one of Hollywood's first films to deal with the activities of the OSS during the war. The movie tackled some of Fritz Lang's favorite motifs, including underground espionage, anti-Nazi activity, and psychological warfare. The secret world of the OSS is expertly illustrated through the codes, secret handshakes, fistfights, and shoot-outs that pepper Jasper's transcontinental flight. The drama of the final escape makes CLOAK AND DAGGER one of Lang's most exciting films.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital 2.0 - EnglishInteractive Menus: Interactive Features Scene Access

Coffee and Cigarettes (DVD) Coffee and Cigarettes (DVD) » Coffee and Cigarettes (DVD)

Jim Jarmusch has consistently wowed audiences with his truly distinctive cinematic vision. Shot over the course of a 17-year-period, COFFEE AND CIGARETTES proves once again that Jarmusch is a true original. This time around, the director tries his hand at the short film genre, delivering 11 shorts that are all based around the seemingly insignificant acts of drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. In the first short, Strange to Meet You, Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni discuss the perks of cigarettes and coffee. In Somewhere in California, Iggy Pop nervously tries to befriend Tom Waits, who decides that he can have a cigarette because he just quit. Cate Blanchett delivers a towering dual-role performance in Cousins, playing both her Hollywood superstar self as well as her bitter cousin. In a similarly titled yet totally different short, Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan are brilliant in Cousins? And then there is Delirium, one of the best short films ever made, in which Rappers Rza and Gza (Wu-Tang Clan) discover that Bill Murray is a coffee addict, and they use their expertise to preach to him the benefits of alternative medicine. Jarmusch builds to a poetic conclusion and the film is shot in an artistic black-and-white, making COFFEE AND CIGARETTES both an impressive work and a lighthearted, yet genuine, tribute to the art of smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Material: Original Theatrical Trailer Interview: 1. Ararat (DVD) Ararat (DVD) » Ararat (DVD)

ARARAT, Atom Egoyan's mysterious drama about the horrors of the largely unknown Armenian genocide in Turkey, unrolls through a film within the film (also titled ARARAT). Jumping back and forth in time, Egoyan weaves together the lives of several people. Ari (Arsinee Khanjian), an art historian, is an advisor on the film. Her son Raffi (David Alplay) is part of the film crew. When Raffi travels to Armenia to gather some additional footage, he is detained by a customs agent (Christopher Plummer) and remains in custody for most of the film. Meanwhile, Raffi's stepsister and girlfriend Celia (Marie-Josee Croze) is haunted by her father's suicide. These and other stories within ARARAT are ostensibly linked through the film within a film. Yet, it is each character's quest for truth which binds them thematically and drives the plot. The film is populated with thematic twins, as each character's individual struggle is mirrored in the plight of the other characters. Egoyan works from his own script relying heavily on references to Arshile Gorky's painting The Artist and his Mother and Clarence Ussher's historical document, AN AMERICAN PHYSICIAN IN TURKEY.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.78Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus
