Caan portrays a disillusioned Chicago high-school teacher who decides to make a pilgrimage to Ireland to learn the truth about his father, whom he never met. He takes along his troubled nephew, who spends his days falling in love with a local school girl. The film shifts between the present and the past, as we learn the story of what happened to Caan's father.
